Default New hamster!

Hey guys I've not posted on here for a very long time because I haven't had any hamsters since I lost Oreo until now!

I let my auntie borrow my hamster cage as she needed it to transport her rabbit. After she had finished using it and didn't need it anymore she brought it back to me yesterday and when I went to go store it away I noticed the cage was full of substrate and there was a cardboard pets at home box in there. I couldn't believe it! I opened up the box and there she was! My auntie had got me a hamster for my birthday present as it is my birthday in a few days

This was totally unexpected and I was not planning on getting another hamster but how could I refuse! She is a little hybrid hamster and I have named her Amber. She is some sort of beige colour with a dusting of white on her back. I will have pictures soon after my camera gets repaired.
I have a few questions.

1. What food mix should I feed her?
So far I am using the burgess dwarf mix but I'm not sure if that is best?

2. Whats the best shop bought treats for her?
I'm looking for something that is not high in sugar etc due to her being diabetes prone.

3. Any recommendations for a wheel?
I'm looking for an upright one so it saves space in the cage.

4. How much mix should she be fed per day?
I heard a heaped tea spoon per day but not sure if that's correct?

Thanks in advance

That's such a sweet present! She sounds lovely!

To answer your questions,
The best food to feed her would be the burgess hamster mix (not dwarf) and add meal worms - if you can't easily get it harry hamster will do fine with mealworms too!

I'd suggest sticking to veggies and savoury treats! Milk drops, milk bones (dog treats!), treat bars (not made with honey) anything savoury is safe (look up a list of veggies safe veggies for Russian hybrids before feeding of course!)

Silent spinners and Wodent wheels are my favourites and are loved by many hamster owners!

I'd recommend a tablespoon of mix and a teaspoon of mealworms a day - though I'd not recommend refilling the bowl until all the food is gone as to not overfeed or promote picky eating!

I hope I helped! Good luck!

I'd also recommend the 8" (20cm) wodent wheel. And I believe any hamster mix should be specifically for dwarf hamsters. I think the Burgess's one is popular. The Rosewood naturals range of treat sticks are sugar-free. We like the Rosewood little hearts and the mini rodent sticks, dandelion sticks and the shrimp cookies. Most of them are available at Amazon and Viovet.

Boredom Breaker Shrimp Cookie for Small Animals - 8 Pieces - 80g Bag: Amazon.co.uk: Pet Supplies

Also this is a great treat! Not cheap at nearly £5 but it lasts for ages and good for their teeth gnawing the wood to get the carrot out.

Congrats on your new hammie! She sounds adorable! I would also recommend the Silent Spinner!!

Aw, congratulations on your newbie hybrid. I have an adoptee from Pets At Home and he`s a great little guy, although he does hide a lot! But he`s a contented little man.

You don`t really need shop-bought treats for hybrids as many (unless they are those natural ranges) can have added syrup/honey/molasses or fruit coatings, so you want to avoid those.

The Burgess Supahamster is what I feed (not the dwarf version) but two things to mention. The `dwarf` version is made for dwarf hamsters and it contains the smaller millet seeds they like, so it`s a nice choice in that respect. So you could buy a bag of this and a bag of the normal Supahamster and mix them together. Best of both. Feed a level tablespoonful daily but watch for her hoarding! Scatter some around in a cardboard egg box for her to play in and find the seeds.

The ordinary Burgess Supahamster is arguably a better mix because it has more variety like flaked grains, pumpkin seeds and poultry meal biscuits. The dwarf version doesn`t have these which is odd. However, the Supahamster does have dried banana pieces in it, but these can easily be seen and removed and kept in a small container. I snip a little piece off and do give my hybrid a small piece of the dry banana as a treat only. What you need to remember is, a small amount of `natural` sugars won`t do any harm. It`s the chocco drops, the yoghurt drops, seed bars and `flavoured treats` they sell as such that you need to avoid. In my view they are a waste of money anyway.

You hamster will enjoy the following too and all are natural, so don`t worry about natural sugars.

One garden pea
One nibblet of sweetcorn
A little fingernail piece of broccoli
Green bean
Small piece of plain lettuce (not iceberg)
Carrot
Cucumber

and a number of other things. A little piece of fresh apple is also enjoyed.

A wheel should be upright as these are more natural for a hamster. The new silent spinners are said not to be as good as the old versions, but suppose if you saw one in a shop you could give it a spin and see what it`s like. The Karlie Wonderland wheels are very good and quiet, but they do require a few coats of Plastikote paint (water based) to make them cleanable. Then you have the Trixie wheels and the Wodent wheels etc...

Home-made toys like cardboard egg boxes, toilet roll tubes, a shoe box or a long tissue box up-turned with no floor in it so she can dog down and make a nice nest in there. Give her ripped up piles of plain cheap white toilet paper to nest with. White toilet paper is good because you can spot any stains or blood on it easily.

Hope this helps. Just allow her to settle in and do her own thing. They like making a mess and talk to her while she`s rummaging around, but handling, unless she`s okay with it, should be kept low down, inside the cage base and little and often. Never use a hamster ball either as they are not necessary. Small handling sessions and letting her come to you are the best approaches. x

What a lovely surprise, congrats on your new ham, she sounds gorgeous!

Feeding a diabetes prone species doesn't need to be hard, just remember that sugar comes in all sorts of forms so avoid anything with things like fruit or honey as well as sugar.
Burgess dwarf mix is fine, I also use the JR farm & Bunny dream mixes from Zooplus for mine as I really don't feel there's enough variety in the Burgess alone & mine do seem to get a bit bored with it.
I agree shop bought treats aren't really necessary & most are full of sugar or fruit, the shrimp cookies do make a good occasional treat (just a little piece will do!) & there's a few that are ok at Zooplus
Oat bites, nibble ears & the Mucki protein mix
Otherwise I would stick to fresh veg, a little piece of millet broken off a spray (if you give them a whole one they can go a bit mad!) a few extra other seeds like hemp, flax, sunflower seeds or pumpkin seeds (in the shell), the odd monkey nut or tiny piece of other nuts & just plain oats or a mealworm or two all make good healthy treats for diabetes prone hams.

As the new silent spinners no longer seem to work well I think the Karlie wonderland wheel is about the best for dwarfs.

Look forward to meeting Amber when she's settled in

Thank you guys! She is settling in well and she is already voluntarily walking onto my hand. I will continue to feed her the Burgess dwarf mix as it is easily available for me compared to other mixes. I will add mealworms into it and make sure she gets plenty other sources of nutrition too. I think I am going to get the wodent wheel as I have been wanting to try one of those for quite some time. I'm also going to buy a few things from zooplus in a few days so I will get the treats mentioned from there. Thanks again!

Hope your new (not so new by now) hammie is settling in well. Pics would be lovely.

All the links here are really useful. I have a syrian but most of those things will be great for him I am sure (he is white and fluffy with red eyes and black round the edges of his ears).

Do you have a name for your hammie yet? Mine is called Woodstock.
