Food for hamsters?
Hey all (:
As I'm new to the hammy world I'm not sure exactly on what sort of foods they can have. I have their basic mixed food from the store but I was thinking more along the lines of stuff I can feed them from my own fridge/cupboard? Like carrots, lettuce, cucumber ect. What sorts of foods are really good to feed them? And what should I avoid all together?
Also my hammys keep chewing up the shredded toilet roll they have for their bedding and stuffing it into their cheeks, is this safe?
Thanks a lot in advance (:

Re: Food for hamsters?
My ham likes boiled carrot, boiled potato, broccoli, red pepper, cooked frozen peas, walnuts, pine nuts, sunflower seeds and boiled chicken. This isn't the only thing you can feed but all that I've tried so far! Here's a list of unsafe and safe foods from the HC wiki Safe and Unsafe Food and Plants - Hamster Central WIKI

Hi and welcome to HC!
There is a useful link on this site which may help
Safe and Unsafe Food and Plants - Hamster Central WIKI
Shredded toilet roll for bedding is fine, we use the same for Apollo. Sometimes we hide nuts and treats in the toilet roll as a little challenge for him! He's a 5month old Syrian.

Re: Food for hamsters?
Thanks for the links!
Looks like they'll be easy to treat as I always have them good foods in my house! I'll only do it in moderation tho not all the time, they can stick with their dry mixed food for dinner everyday and the other stuff can be a treat every now and then (:
Interesting to learn about the bad food as well so thanks (:
