That is not a bad habit to have mini - a weekly clean is the ideal. You find as you get more hamsters however that 42 enclosures every week is impossible and different species can go longer between clean outs. Try using a potty and you may find you can extend your clean outs to every 10 days or a fortnight. Save you time and pennies. I do think it stresses my hamsters out a bit having their cages cleaned, especially the Roborovski which is another reason I feel happy cleaning them out monthly.

I must be overly fussy then: I clean my dwarfies out every three or four days!! Their cage isn't huge and I guess it doesn't get that dirty but I just like to make sure they have a clean environment. Plus, being cleaned out means Playtime In The Bath and even more interaction with me which they thoroughly enjoy

Your cleanliness is commendable however please do bear in mind that Dwarf hamsters especially are scent driven and I would check their scent glands to ensure they are not over producing the waxy substance you find on their underneath in an attemt to compensate for being cleaned out so often. With a sand potty/bath even a pair of Dwarf hamsters in a relatively small enclosure should go 7 - 10 days plus between changes - maybe try not doing complete change outs but one half at a time, leaving the other side intact. I would try to obtain a larger enclosure and decrease the frequency of my cleanouts to a fortnight if I could, with only daily spot checks as necessary, removing any obvous dirty or wet patches, and change potty sand every 2 - 3 days instead.

OK, thanks for the advice I guess I'm just over fussy with them

They will be treated to a much larger home when I move house in few months but in the meantime I'll take your advice. Thank you

I clean usually once every two weeks. I used to do it every week but that is kind of costly.

And yeah, I use that bedding too! I need to get out to walmart and get some more. But I love it and so does my Sakana!
