I thought exactly this when I first bought one but it's fine! The gap is only there until you press the front and back pieces onto the running track. So you need to make sure the spacer is right in the middle (even sized gaps).

And you need to press the back and front pieces on really firmly. Then there is no gap!

The first one I ever bought I found I just hadn't pressed the back and front together firmly enough.

The 12" is a great wheel. I've used it for a few syrians now.

There should be no gap at all if the spacer is central and the back and front are pressed really firmly together. And I mean - really firmly! I actually contacted the manufacturers over this the first time which is when I found out I didn't have the wheel correctly assembled and the back and front pushed right in.

Thank you Serendipity. You have really reassured me. I will get my partner to fit it together and check the gap then. I will make sure it is very firmly pressed together.

I had the same concerns about a gap and hamster toes but it'll be fine. The running track needs to be right inside the grooves in the back and front fully and only firmly pressing back and front together will do that. It's a fiddle getting the track into one half and then fitting the other half over the other side of the track, but once it's in place push back and front together firmly . It's easier when the wheel is despatched already assembled. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't,

Once you've taken it apart and put it back together a few times it gets quicker and easier.

Thank you. My wheel was sent without being assembled which is why I was having the concerns about the gap. You have been so helpful.
