Re: New owner! Best cage for robo dwarf hamster
Thanks for that Dodo, great advice.
Regarding the wheel, my hamster so far shows absolutely no interest in his wheel - it's a good sized one that I bought separately. I just ordered a flying saucer to see if he might prefer that, but any tips on how to encourage him to use a wheel? It's like he's not sure what it's for. I have put some treats on the wheel to encourage him onto it, which he grabs then takes back to his house to eat... :/

Re: New owner! Best cage for robo dwarf hamster
that's surprising, robos love their wheels. Maybe he didn't have one at the pet store... Maybe he's using it when you sleep? You can put some bedding on top to see if it's been turning... You can try the flying saucer, though careful because robos literally fly from it because they go so fast, so make sure you have a good layer of bedding around.... You can always let him run in a bathtub with towels, but please do not use a hamster ball which are dangerous.
I hope you find a nice cage soon, good luck cage hunting

Difficult. Yes the maxi duna multy is on Amazon.fr - same price as in the Uk - about 100 euros. It is expensive. It’s a great cage and plenty of space for an interesting set up for a Robo.
I am wondering though if you email portion aquapet in the link above - they may ship the standard duna multy to you in France. It’s less than half the price.

Zooplus.fr does have the odd thing but mainly only the Marrakesh tank which costs a lot more than the maxi duna multy.

Re: New owner! Best cage for robo dwarf hamster
Serendipity, that hamster hotel is SO weird haha!
Dodo - yeah he didn't have a wheel in the pet store unfortunately... They sold me a ball, but I have since realised that is no good for him, so I won't use it (is it OK for Syrian hamsters?).
I will definitely try the bath as a playpen when he is less afraid of me.... right now it's a success if he takes a treat from my hand and then darts for cover. I am nervous about how I am going to physically move him into his new cage when he is so terrified of me still. I was thinking about trying to coax him into the ball using a treat or something.....

Re: New owner! Best cage for robo dwarf hamster
Using a ball to take him from one place to the next is a good idea. You can also use a large mug, or jug. Anything that they’ll go into voluntarily (put a treat in!). The ball is not safe for Syrians or any other hamsters. They can break their nails, toes, feet or legs, and simply have no control over where they’re going or when to get out. Just use it as a vessel, that’s as good as balls get. And I am sure your hammie will warm up to the wheel eventually. That he didn’t have one in the pet store is really cruel.

Re: New owner! Best cage for robo dwarf hamster
Lots of opinions on hamster balls! General consensus is they're not good for some of the reasons Dodo mentioned. The other issue is hamster balls are too small. Rat balls are a better size but have larger slits so toes get caught easier. I do have the Savic rat ball (which has the narrowest slits of all the rat balls) and I do very occasionally let our hamsters go in it - if they hop into it. But a playpen area is better.
Maximum time they should be in a ball is 10 minutes really with constant observation. It's great for transporting them though. Even a smaller ball is good for that.
