Re: Ex-owner looking for cage advice
Hello,
If you feel like doing a bit of DIY, the Ikea Detolf glass cabinet is a cheap and amazing option. Tons of videos on youtube show you how to adapt it to your hamster.
I've just got a hamster and only discovered after buying a 80x50 cage that I could have had a Detolf for the same price. Will probably upgrade at some point!

Re: Ex-owner looking for cage advice
Hiya! At the moment I can't get anywhere that has the materials to make the lid (Combo of lockdown, no shops within a reasonable distance for the excuse to go, and working in a care home so being incredibly cautious as to where I DO go) - but I have a huge glass aquarium that is roughly the same size apparently so at some point I'll probably be doing that! The cage I got was secondhand and a really decent bargain so when I do upgrade it's not like I've spent a fortune unnecessarily, haha!

Re: Ex-owner looking for cage advice
Just wanted to say thank you all. I've got the cage and have been accepted by a rescue for a little boy when he is ready to go

Oh that is lovely. Can’t wait to meet him. Your job must be incredibly difficult sometimes at the moment- a hard time for a lot of people. Havibg another hamster should bring joy and a new best friend . Along with moody behaviour ha ha (by the hamster).

Re: Ex-owner looking for cage advice
It's been a very rough time, yes - and I've missed having a little furry face waiting for me so this will be just what I need I dont mind moody luckily! I'm just waiting on a bunch of chews and substrate and a hide arriving in the post and then I'll post my setup in the thread and see what folks think! The wheel that the person gave me with the cage was perfect so that was great.

Re: Ex-owner looking for cage advice
Exciting There is also a section of the forum for starting an individual thread for the hamster (under species/Syrian) if you want, so we can follow his antics.

Re: Ex-owner looking for cage advice
Hey. I'm still new to this so please take my advice with a grain of salt.
I've recently got a hamster as well and wanted to share a few things, it might be common knowledge lol
- I'm from the u.k. as well and I found fitch paper bedding to be a good cheap alternative to the stuff they have in pet shops/online, they do free delivery and do 10kg for 22 quid!
- visit a asda or morrisons before visiting the pet shop or buying online, most of the time I find they have the same products for cheaper. Things like seeds, harry hamster mix, treats. Some grocery stores even have toys.
- just because it's for a hamster doesnt mean it's safe. It's sad but I bought a wood house, and a wood multi chamber and both had a piece of metal sticking out on the inside.
Thanks for taking care of our elderly!
Tommmy
