Default Hamster bedding

Hey everyone, i currently have wood shavings as a substrate foe my robos, but reading that paper bedding is better. Pardon me if this sounds stupid but can hamsters use the paper stuff to burrow and store their food or is it better to have to separate types of material.

The paperbased bedding is fine for burrowing and keeping a hoard in. I just watched my Robo disappear down a Kaytee clean and cozy tunnel after foraging for some food.

The paper based bedding works great for burrowing, as long as you have enough bedding in the enclosure, your hamster should be able to burrow with no problem.

Paper bedding is great for burrowing! I've been using Aubiose (hemp) bedding for quite a while and that also works well, but I think it's actually a bit more difficult to burrow in, as not all my hamsters seemed to burrow in it much (but others did, so who knows?).

You still provide paper nesting material as well . Plain white toilet paper torn into strips is safest- a pile of that and the pouch it and take it to the heat to build or rebuild it. But they will also take the odd bit of paper substrate/bedding as well for their nest. The strips are easier for nest building though and it keeps its shape better. Hamsters also really enjoy the paper bedding as it’s soft. I use Fitch which is recycled food grade paper. Looks very similar to Kaytee clean and cosy but comes in bulk 10kg bags (about the size of a child’s beanbag chair).
