Yes, that's wise to let him settle in now. With a shoe or cardboard box house instead of the plastic penthouse the cage is fine for now. You can always add things later once you know what your hamster likes to do. It looks a lot cosier with the shelf in and gives your hamster more shelter.

I made him a shoebox hideout yesterday, and he loves it lol. He's not sleeping next to his wheel anymore which I'm very happy about. I feel a little uneasy about it because I like to keep an eye on him, but I'll get over it lol.
