I'm in a similar position at the moment myself with a carpeted room and a fairly new pair of female rats. While I haven't figured out anything just yet I will definitely try to post more here if I do find any good ideas!
I've tried with cardboard. She just rips it up! Which is better than her ripping the carpet, I suppose, but it's not sustainable!

It would be size restricting, but you could perhaps try using an underbed storage bin or similar shallow plastic bin to make a base for your playpen. Hopefully others might have even more ideas too though.

A good option for under a play pen is a PVC table cloth in fabric shops you can usually get them cut to size or just buy of the shelf and have overhang. They are super easy to clean and fold up small for putting away.

They sound pretty similar! I was going to come back and say I’d made a wall out of cardboard boxes and blocked off half the room and it was all going very well. Then she was out last week and escaped through gaps in the wall twice, got into a cupboard full of stuff, luckily tempted out with pumpkin seeds. I just had her out again this evening and she was ok, didn’t get out. She does rush around getting faster and faster and I worry that the whole thing is just stressing her. Perhaps I should make some more tunnels, although she can go around behind her cage, so that’s like a tunnel. I do try to think of ways to make her cage bigger, but it’s 1m by 50cm so unless I can find one with more levels there no more floor space for it. It does have a second level inside and and ramps. I think she’s just super active!
