I think this may be one of the studies that people refer to re cage size. It was done in 2007 it is for syrian hamsters, I am not aware of any specific study for dwarf hamsters and cage sizes. [PDF] Behaviour of golden hamsters ( Mesocricetus auratus ) kept in four different cage sizes | Semantic Scholar

Ive heard about scientific studies (from you tube videos that i watched from professional channels) where people put female hamsters in 3 different size cages, one being like 100 square inches, another being 600 square inches, and another being like 1800 square inches, and the behaviors of stress EXTREMELY leveled from the small cages to the larger ones, and even in the largest cage some hamsters still showed signs of stress which really proves how much space hamsters need.

This was with unbroken floor space meaning no connecting cages or anything, just one specific sized cage. Broken floor space does not equal to one big cage.

personally i would not recommend these types of setups, plus you are giving profit to general bad company's. Your are better off using a IKEA detolf, 40+ gallon take, or bin cage.

I wouldn't put a hamster in a habitrail cage. But our last ham had quite a roomy enclosure, and I added some tubes on the side which she absolutely loved. She would take a treat and find a comfy place to sit in her tubes to eat it. After cleaning, and just beginning to refit the tubes to the outside, she would jump into the tubes before we'd even connected them up properly. Tubes can work, but they need floor space in the cage as well.

I've not long ago rescued two dwarfs living in habitrails and one of those habitats had an enclosed wheel attached to the main bubble compartment. The wheel had large gaps on the running surface with a drip tray underneath the wheel to catch the urine.
Aside from the fact that the wheel and tray are hard to clean and consequently stunk, i also concluded that the wheel was a dangerous trap for little paws.
