A few questions
Hi, everyone!
I buried my hamster in the garden the day she died and its now 2 weeks later.
Its still very sad but she had a good life and I am ready to move on now to the next hamster .
I have a few questions and i also want to upload photos of my next hamsters cage setup (I bought ANOTHER cage)
How do I upload photos to hamster central so that they show on the page?
- I want to show you all my giant setup
Also, a neighbour of mine has a male syrian hamster. if I would get a female syrian would breeding be possible or is that not a good idea?

Re: A few questions
Hi, I'm sorry for the loss of your hamster.
There is a thread on here that tells you how to post a photo, but I can't find it. Someone else may be able to find the link for you.
I would love to see what your new setup looks like.
Breeding would be possible, but I don't recommend it.
This is a really good video about why you shouldn't breed from your hamster, the main thing being you do not know either of the hamsters background which can cause issues.

Re: A few questions
Hello. I too am sorry for the loss of your hamster. Do you mean just post a photo along with your message? If that's what you mean then if you look at my thread 'hello I'm Liz' on page 2 at the bottom Ria told me how to post a photo. I dont know how to copy her message in here to make it simpler! If you meant posting a photo on a particular page within the forum I'm not sure how to do that.

Re: A few questions
I’m sorry for your loss.
It would be nice to see your cage, there’s a thread here that shows how to upload photos.
How To Embed Photos
Do not breed your ham, this should be left to experienced breeders with a good understanding of genetics, mating properly & caring for the young hams, with no knowledge of genetics you could end up with a disaster & breeding poses dangers for any female ham, even experts can lose hams through complications of pregnancy so if you do get a female never let her come in any kind of contact with your friends male.

Re: A few questions
Thank for the help with putting photos up.
Here is my new cage setup:

The bottom cage is a pets at home large cage and the top one is a ferplast criceti 15. they are connected together with the ferplast tubes.
Is this cage setup too big for a new hamster from the pet store? Would it overwhelm them? Maybe I should start off with just some of the setup?
The last hamster I had was a syrian, and as breeding has been heavily not recommended, it would be nice to get a dwarf hamster. Unfortunately, I don't know much about them so a bit more info would be nice.
I know you all don't think breeding is an option, but I am not a beginner with hamsters and I may want to get a syrian anyway just in case. Which would be best for what I have?

Re: A few questions
It's a little hard to see what's in the cages clearly, what size wheel is thst? It does look more suitable for a dwarf rather than a Syrian. I think the cage size would be better for a dwarf too, they do need adequate continuous floor space so joining cages isn't the same as having one large cage.
Not sure if this is your final set up so maybe you would be adding more substrate, the base of the cage should be filled right up.
There's a thread here that will tell you more about keeping dwarf hams if you only have experience of Syrians.
The next step...

Re: A few questions
The wheel is a medium pets at home wheel and was fine for my syrian for two years. It may even be a bit big for a dwarf hamster. I can add plenty more substrate no problem, and the lower cage is bigger than it looks. If you think it would be fine to put a dwarf straight into this setup from a tiny pets at home enclosure, I may just do that

Re: A few questions
I always assumed pets at home food would be fine but it seems dwarfs need special food?
I was planning on getting a hamster today but if they need special food do I have to get it first or will they manage on pets at home food to start with?

Re: A few questions
Another reason I am not sure about getting a dwarf is... well... hybrids. I really don't want a hybrid even if its fine, I would prefer to know what species it is. Maybe i should look into getting a hamster from a breeder?

Re: A few questions
I dont’t know what size the P@H wheels are but all my Russians & Chinese have 9” wheels.
It shouid be fine to put a ham straight in there, the age they usually are at P@H they’re fine going into that size cage.
They do need a good dwarf specific mix but as a ham from P@H will most likely have been eating their mix then it would be ok to continue with that for a short while.
If you don’t want a hybrid then you will have to go on a breeders waiting list probably, hybrids can be a bit more prone to health problems but there’s no guarantee with any ham so that’s just a personal choice to make.
