Default Likes his playground more then the cage

I dont know if I should laugh or not.
Our Bolla, has a exo terra 90 cm. To give him a playground, I give him space with frame around there are 120*80 cm. The thing is that he likes to be in that more then his cage.

I dont have space to have his playground and his cage up at the same time. So I wonder, should I just let him live in the playground and put a box with bedding in? Now he does have carpet in the bottom at the playground.

When I takes him up from the playground and put him in the cage, he does look a little confused and starts to tryingto climb at the glass.

I did this too until my hamster discovered that she could chew thru the cardboard box that was the barrier to keeping her away from the walls/cables! I was in the process of major cleaning her cage so instead of making her go back to it right away, she seemed content and happy to stay in her playpen and sleep...and it seemed like she was happier there. She had spent many nights free roaming and not biting the box and only exploring the designated areas with supervision.

But alas sleeping in gave her enough time to find the weak spot and she chewed her way to the other side of the barrier I had set up and she chewed wallpaper off the walls, got into the fish food bag...needless to say it was a MESS to cleanup. Glad she didn't get to the power cords. She promptly went into her newly designed and cleaned cage... to enjoy it in there for a few nights as she was arranging/engineering things to her liking! When I called to her for play time, she just stayed bunkered down and did not want to come out! I could hear her shuffling around in her new hide and she had been coming up for food and water, so I think it was fine.

I learned that playpens are just obstacles to be broken out of, no matter how 'chill' we think the hamsters are!

Could you show a photo of his set up in the Exo Terra please?

Some of my hamsters freeroam in a hamster proof room under supervision and one of them sometimes bites his cage door when i put him back in. I find that he does that when i'm in the room to get my attention but as soon as i leave the room and turn the light off he stops and starts to hamster about in his cage.

Personally, i wouldn't leave a hamster in a playpen without supervision because they can be little escape artists and do things we don't expect them to do.
Also, i don't think carpet is a suitable base because a hamster could chew it and ingest the fibre which wouldn't be healthy.

I wouldn't leave a hamster in a playpen all the time. They can and will find away out eventually, also I would be worried that anything can happen to them if they aren't somewhere with secure 4 walls and a top and bottom. Personally I don't think it is worth the risk.
Also, I know chances are this wouldn't happen but what if a mouse or rat or other animal got into your home and you let your hamster just live free in their playpen.
I like to know my hamsters are tucked up safe and secure in their cages when I am not about.

I feel like I should try to give him a bigger cage.
The playpen is built better then it was so he cant escape. Can it help to set his cage a place where its more calm so he might settle down?

The 90cm wide exo terra is a good size but maybe its the set up itself that could be improved?
If we could have a look then people may be able to come up with suggestions.

Yes, I can take a photo off it, but how do I upload it here?

Rashy, would you mind sharing which kind of playpen you have? I have the Vivapet octagon one with vertical bars 8 inches high, and my dwarf can shimmy up the bars and escape over the top. How did you makes yours escape-proof?
