Alternative to Silicone?
I made a thread a few days ago about my dwarf hamster, Egg, displaying some behaviors I feared were stress-based; specifically, the her-cage-is-too-gotdang-small sort of stress. A couple of users helped to put my mind at ease, which I very much appreciated, but since then, her behaviors have escalated. She managed to escape her playpen while I had my back turned (I was doing some spot-cleaning) and even though I noticed and caught her again almost instantly, the short taste of freedom seems to have upset her greatly. She's pawing at the sides of the cage worse than ever and she's even started "stargazing" quite a bit. She's plainly not happy.
So I'm going to go to the hardware store tomorrow and buy some melamine so I can make a 48 inch by 48 inch cage that hopefully she'll be happy in. I'm also planning on ix-naying the plexiglass this time because I'm wondering if she'll be happier if she can't see that there's a wider world outside her enclosure, so it should be pretty straight forward. My question at the moment is -- is there an alternative to silicone that I can use?
My room is in the basement, so I would either have to absent myself AND Egg while it cures (which might well take longer than two days since there's so little ventilation), which would mean taking her cage up two sets of stairs so I could lock her in the spare bedroom where my cat can't get at her (not great, since I'm physically disabled, so is one of my roommates, and the other roommate isn't exactly a strongman)...OR I could build it and let it cure upstairs, but again, we'd have to somehow get it back downstairs after it had been built, which would be very difficult for the same reasons.
I'm sure we could do it if we had to, but...I'd rather not if there's any other option. Honestly, considering Egg only ever pees on her wheel and in her sandbath (seriously, I keep checking, but I've never once found any urine anywhere else in the month I've had her), I'm wondering if it's even strictly necessary. Help, anyone?

Re: Alternative to Silicone?
You can get an aquarium sealant which is totally safe for hamsters. If you do buy silicone make sure it is 100% silicone and after you assemble the cage make sure you let it dry and air for at least a week.

Re: Alternative to Silicone?
Aquarium sealant and 100% silicon would be essentially the same thing, and unfortunately both still have the same issues of having to be safely cured before use and such.
