Substrate Query
Hiya I recently set up my new hamster cage and used a mix of wood shavings, hay and white paper bedding. The mix probably suits the hamster but looks pretty awful! I'm thinking of adding a natural paper bedding on top but presumably this make it difficult to spot poo for spot cleaning? It shows up well on the wood shavings / white currently so maybe I should go for practicality rather than asthetics! What does everyone else do?

Re: Substrate Query
Easy answer: Chuck the wood shavings and hay out and replace with a deep layer of Kaytee clean and cozy.
Your hamster will love it and so will you. Its great for burrowing and looks good.
Don't worry about poops. You won't need to clean them out for a long time. They don't smell.
Hamsters are very clean little creatures and need to be able to settle into their new homes without much cleaning going on around them.

Re: Substrate Query
What Ria said. In fact if the hay hasn’t been frozen first I would also clean out the cage base thoroughly before putting new substrate in. Very common to get mites in hay.
I use Fitch rather than Kaytee C&C. Similar but comes in a 10kg bag, lasts months, dust free and hamsters love it. It’s recycled food grade paper. It’s white. Poops show up really well lol. If you wanted something more natural looking you can get Kaytee C&C in natural colour but I found the coloured ones smell a bit of ink at first.

Re: Substrate Query
Hi thanks for the tips. The Kaytee bedding is so expensive though to fill up a 100cm cage!? I've heard people talk abt Aspen bedding. Does that have a mite problem?
