Default Hamster closes tunnel

My brand new young hamster purposely clogged the tunnel leading up to where she sleeps with her bedding. Iíve seen this behavior before in new hamsters, and I assume they just feel safe by blocking anything from getting to them.

Should I unclog it myself or should I let her keep it that way? Iím a little concerned she may have trouble getting down to her water bottle if she seals the only way down. I donít know if she can unblock it easily by herself

It should be fine, mine are always blocking up tunnels, makes me wonder why I put them in!
Do you have a photo of the cage? That would help see if access to the water bottle might be a problem.

Blocking their tunnels is a natural behaviour, mine loves to rip up loo roll to fill up and block in his nest area.

(I hope the picture shows up)
She has multiple cages attached, but this is the type that she sleeps in, and she seals that tunnel on the right going up.

I posted her type of cage on the bottom of this thread because it wouldn’t let me post a picture in a quick reply

I can see why blocking that tube might be a problem, I thought you might have been referring to a tunnel in the cage, it’s best to avoid cages with external tunnels like that, they can get blocked or they may nest in them & pee in them which is also a problem.
Where exactly does she sleep in there? I’m a bit confused as there seems to be very little substrate & no house.

In my setup, that cage is on the far right. Every hamster I’ve had always chooses to sleep in the top area that the tunnel goes up to. They like to keep a ton of bedding up there and bury their food in there as well. (Man, I give them way more bedding than they show in all the cage photos.) We always give them multiple sleeping options like igloos and stuff but for some reason they always choose that area. I figure they must like being closed in and having a bunch of bedding around them. (My last hamster understood how it opened and always pushed her nose up on the lid if she heard me near.)

Also the rest of the interior doesn’t look like that. She has a different kind of wheel and that and most of her toys are in a different cage connected to the left. Instead of sleeping in the igloo, all my hamsters liked to jump on top of it. I usually monitor the top area more carefully for cleaning because it’s their favorite spot

Maybe you should rethink your set up and replace a number of small cages with one large cage with a large wheel, a large bottomless house, deep substrate and no tubes at all?
By large cage i mean in the region of 80cmx50cm. It would resolve all tube related issues, save on cleaning and have everything she needs like the aforementioned essentials plus hides, toys etc in one space.
Just a thought.

I only saw a picture of a tiny travel cage? Ideally hamsters need continuous floor space of at least 80cm x 50cm.
