Do you know why the old owner gave her away? Do you know what the old owner meant by tame? Were they able to handle her?
Most hamsters get upset when they find themselves un a new environment with strange sounds and smells.
I always have a suitable cage ready and set up before i take in a hamster because they usually arrive in a tiny and bare plastic cage. To have somewhere to burrow, hide and sleep helps them to settle in. It is also lovely to watch them display natural behaviours and do hamstery things they weren't able to do before. I always put something from their old cage in the new one so they have a familiar smell.
