Best storage bin
Hi, I’m looking for good storage bins available in the UK? Preferably clear and relatively cheap

Re: Best storage bin
To convert into a bin cage with a meshed lid and a meshed window?
For a dwarf hamster the large Samla from Ikea would be a cheap option but for a Syrian the only storage box big enough would be the 145l really useful box which retails for £35 from Wickes.
Add mesh and cable ties plus optional decorative tape and the cost soon adds up.

Re: Best storage bin
I agree with Ria, a good quality large enough storage bin isn’t really a cheap option when you add it all up.
I have the 145L RUB which is a good size for a dwarf, maybe big enough for a not too demanding Syrian.

Yep, it’s for a Syrian.
Mesh isn’t too expensive for the lid and my dad can drill holes. Is this one equally as good for roughly the same price (just out of ease of transport):

I’m not sure how to figure out the floorspace on the Wickes one, I think this Argos one is 800sq inches

Re: Best storage bin
That argos one is a pretty good size, I think I remember someone, can’t remember who though, who had a ham chew on the bits over the wheels but I think it would probably be ok.
I don’t think in sq inches! The most best way to work it out is just go by dimensions & check to see how much the sides slope as that can reduce floor space.

Re: Best storage bin
Mazzypan, i use that one as a run, never had a problem with chewing around the wheel area. Itnis a good size, 100 x 50cm if I remember rightly. Yes, Cypher I think Benefitben(?) Was having that issue. It was something I had worried about when getting it and I always thought I could put some tiles or a ceramic plantpot over them or something similar, but never had to. It does slope in a bit, but by the time you add a few inches of bedding you don't really lose any floorspace.
I bought mine with my nectar points so it didn't cost me anything.

Re: Best storage bin
Best get your dad to cut out and mesh the lid and a front window as well so the hamster can see out. I also add a back vent for additional ventilation.
You can get an Alaska cage for £35 or less from Zooplus. That's also a good cage for a Syrian but i don't know if they're still out of stock.
Just another option.

Re: Best storage bin
I had a look around for the Alaska as I was going to mention that too but it doesn’t seem to be available anywhere at the moment.

There are quite a few good second hand cages around at the moment. I've seen a couple of Alaskas for £20 on Gumtree in my area lately. There's also a Barney going for £30. I think its because the number of hamsters for sale in pet shops is still restricted and there are none in the adoption section.
