Hmm well if you have the capacity to keep the hamster if returned then fair enough, otherwise I wouldnt say it would be fair to do and have the hamster potentially going from home to home

I think you have to think of the hamster.
What would it feel like

You should leave a hamster to settle for two weeks in its new home before starting to handle it so - if they only have it for two weeks it will be very scared.

I would not do it.

If you want to re-home your hamster try to find a permanent home where it is not a child’s pet

My way of thinking is that i'd rather keep a hamster myself unless i'm 100% certain he's going to a good home.

Questions i ask are:
Have you had hamsters before, if yes what species.
What kind of cage and set up do you have. I will need proof of the cage and set up.
Who is the hamster for. Only responsible adults or older children with responsible parents to be considered. I would also point out that a hamster is not a suitable pet for a child.
Do you have a hamster ball. If the answer is yes its the end of that conversation.
What do you know about hamsters. Quick summery of their knowledge.
Would you be able to take the hamster to a vet if needed.

I've only rehomed two hamsters myself sofar so am not that experienced but i found that a genuine suitable person is very enthusiastic and provides me with all the information i need including photos of their set up before i even ask questions because it is what they would ask themselves.

Worst response i had was a "what's the lowest you would take". Anybody who talks money and tries to barter over a hamster is a no go.
I had people trying to convince me that their other hamster loves living in a 3 tier cage and run in a hamster ball so that was another easy No for me.
Another tried to get me to hand over the hamster because she knew people who wanted one and had a big cage so i told her to point out my advert to them.

Nobody has ever asked me to try out a hamster and i wouldn't entertain this idea because it takes a hamster a while to get used to new surroundings. A move is stressful for them and i don't believe in causing them unnecessary stress. It's their welfare that's my main concern.

People either want a hamster or they don't and should do their research before getting one.

I honestly don't think you can accurately predict that based on such a short period of time. I personally would never put a hamster in this situation for the reasons that others have already mentioned and would instead strongly urge the parents in this case to seriously think about whether or not such a pet is truly a good fit for them.

Rashy, if they want the hamster, then i think it is up to the parents to accept that if they get a hamster they might up having to look after it when the kids get bored. If they aren't prepared to do that, then I don't think a hamster (or any pet) is the pet for them. It's not fair on the animal.

They want a hamster to make toys to, cuddle places and play places to.

Rashy, just thinking, but what happens if they aren't bored in 2 weeks time, but maybe 3 weeks or a month or two they are bored, Then what? If I was you and the parents aren't willing to step up to being responsible I would walk away from this whole situation.

I asked them and the answer was that then they just have to live with it and then they know how it is to take care off the hamster.

That's the thing. Any parent who allows their kids to get a pet needs to be prepared to get involved and teach their kids a sense of responsibility. Teach them that a pet is there to be loved and cared for for the duration of its life and can't be discarded like an unwanted toy.

Unfortunately, a lot of parents are irresponsible and teach their kids that its ok to get rid of a hamster when the novelty has worn off or the hamster doesn't live up to their expectations.
