Sealant for wooden hideouts
Hi everyone! I have a Syrian hamster, Lu (or Big Lu as my gf and I like to call her) and I’m trying to figure out what would be a safe option for sealing her wooden hideouts. Someone mentioned Plastikote online but then I found conflicting reviews about it. Same for Modge Podge and Elmers Glue. I have spent an insane amount of money buying her new wooden houses every time they get ruined because she doesn’t like the plastic ones or the grass huts that are available. Please help! I refuse to deprive her of the things she likes but the money is starting to add up and I just want to be able to seal the wood. Even if it’s only temporary, or if I have to re-apply it occasionally. It would help immensely. Thank you so much in advance for any suggestions!

Re: Sealant for wooden hideouts
Plastikote is the best thing, it has to be the water based enamel paint though, there are other plastikote products that wouldn’t be safe.

Re: Sealant for wooden hideouts
What cypher said The water based enamel paint is fine - virtually odourless as well. It comes in a small pot and you paint it on with a brush. I just use a normal house painting brush about half inch size or quarter inch size.
You can get it on Amazon but the search criteria makes it difficult to find somehow as there are lots of other types of plastikote.
It's this one. One small pot will easily do two coats on a very large house. So for a standard sized house you'd have about half a pot left over after painting two coats.
It dries very quickly but I leave the second coat till next day to ensure it's fully hardened. If it's slightly sticky then the second coat is difficult to apply or takes ages to dry. Painting it on quite thinly is best. I usually use the clear one but couldn't get hold of it recently so I used one of the colours
The clear is back in stock but there is also a range of colours on the link. It needs two coats really to protect the wood and make it wipe clean. Been using it for years.

Re: Sealant for wooden hideouts
Thank you both so much! I will be purchasing it now. Fingers crossed that this works. She LOVES her wooden houses so much so this is a lifesaver (And a wallet saver!). Y’all are awesome, thank you so much again.
