I didn't actually think about that, when first got my hamster I was keeping him in a 488 sq inch cage and he wasn't happy and kept chewing the bars but now that I have him in the Detolf he hasn't attempted anything that could be considered even close to escaping. Thank you for catching that, wouldn't want OP to buy a cage that could potentially cause their hammy to escape. I wonder if the shelves could be put up against the wood and sealed in place with aquarium sealant, I haven't actually tried it so I wouldn't know but it could still be a more affordable option than a similarly sized tank
