Default DIY Wood or Glass Cage?

Hello Community.

I plan on making a DIY cage in the near future. The dimensions of the cage will be 4 foot long x 3 foot deep x 2 feet high. The base will be made of wood (sanded and sealed with food grade wood finish). My question

1) is since my kids and I love watching it sleep in its burrow, is it okay to make the cage with all four sides glass? or is it better to have 3 sides wood and 1 side glass?

2) Is there anything I need to consider?

Thanks in Advance

Great question, I have 2 bought cages, one has glass on two sides and wood on the ends, The other is 4 sides of perspex. I think in all honesty it is probably better for the hamster to have a totally dark place to sleep (although some will sleep out in the open, or squashed up in corners against the glass/perspex). They are all different.

My syrian Twinkle who is in the 4 sided perspex cage has his house up against one corner and i did see his food stash at one time underneath the house so I could watch him sleep eat, but I didn't see him sleep. So whatever you end up doing your hamster may have it's own idea whether you see what he gets up to or not.

So, I guess it's entirely up to you really and what you prefer to do.

I think Luna said it all really, a lot will depend on your ham but I think it’s nice for them & more natural to have a darker area, I don’t have tanks but with my bin cage I put a blanket over one end (on the outside) & they seem to like that darker area although I can still watch them burrowing in other places.

I've seen some people cover tanks on 3 sides with dark paper to provide darkness.
