Default Hay in hamster cage?

Hi there, I am getting a dwarf russian hamster soon which I've never kept before as I've always had syrians. I have the cage and everything to go in it on the way but I was wondering if I can somehow use timothy hay in the cage as I have a big bag left over from my last guinea pig and it seems a shame to waste it or is it not a good idea?
