Re: Meet Percy. The Ham who likes to sleep under the stars!
I wouldn't worry - I've found they tend to pee in the nest when they're babies but soon learn better habits. And it is very early days at 8 days old. And some hamsters are quirky. Pickle has a 3 room rodipet house but for a long time kept nesting on top of the litter tray! And using it both as a toilet and a nest. Perhaps for the first 2 or 3 months. So I tried moving the toilet to the other room. Then he had a nest in one room and the toilet in the other. But then he built two nests! He was a bit jumpy so liked to dart into the other nest if he heard the house roof being taken off. Ultimately he seemed to just like nesting in the potty! The three room house doesn't work as well though because the middle room is open above and so I think he sees it as two separate houses.
The house that has always worked best for me is the Rodipet labyrinth house - they always nest in the same room in that and use the room next to it as a toilet - except for Moo who was adopted at a year old and he chose to pee in a different room as far away from the nest as possible. Very tidy of him!
The two room house works well. I think they soon grow out of peeing in the nest. All our hamsters have done that initially as babies and I think it is just not learning better habits yet. I would just leave it for now and give him the time to settle for another week or so until he becomes more confident. Maybe check his nest once a week - it won't do much harm if it's wet for a few days. I also find once you have to replace the nest it sort of teaches them not to do it again! Although there can be the odd accident for the first 2 or 3 months.
He is maybe a bit nervy about coming out of the house just yet so doing everything in one place. So not bedwetting as such but not yet out of nappies!
