Question Appropriate Cage Location?

Hi everyone!! I'm new to the forum. 👋🏻 Now I currently don't own a hamster, but I am planning to get one in the next month or so. Once I do, here is my cage setup. (And I have a few questions about the setup in question.) So I want an IKEA Detolf! I have an empty IKEA Kallax in my basement where I hear it sits perfectly on top. But here is the thing. It's a basement, so there is minimal natural lighting. I'm not sure about the circumstances with hamsters and natural lighting, but I assume they need quite a bit? We have a large window down there but it's on the opposite side of the Kallax. So there's that. But there is more. Right next to where the Detolf would sit is my dad's vinyl collection. He doesn't play his vinyls often but when he does it's loud. When he does, I'm assuming that would bother the hammy. Because of this, I'm totally fine with bringing the hammy out to the bathtub or a playpen when my dad is playing his vinyl. And don't worry, he rarely plays his vinyl during the daytime so I wouldn't be interrupting the hammy's sleep. Sorry for this being a lengthy post, just one last thing. We have a television in the basement my mother uses basically everyday. This is not nearly as loud as the record player, but I'm wondering if this will bother the hammy? She also only watches television at night (when the hammy would be awake of course.) So yeah! I'm just wondering if this is too many possible issues and I should try putting the potential cage somewhere else in my house. Totally fine if I should, I want y'alls honesty. 🤗😊 Also, this is also my first time getting a hamster. But I did have a hedgehog who had her cage in our basement and she adjusted fine, RIP Lemon.

Hi & welcome to HC

Hamsters do respond to light, both day/night cycles & the day length, as long as there is sufficient daylight coming in through the window so the difference between day & might is easily discernible then it should be fine for a hamster.
The loud music would probably be disturbing to your ham but if it can come out for out of cage time when that’s happening then it may not be a problem, depends on what your hams natural routine will be like, they all differ as to the times they tend to wake & sleep.
They soon adjust to normal household sounds & TV shouldn’t be a problem.

Hi. Are you in the US? Just wondering how hot or cold it is where you are and if the basement has central heating. Those would be my concerns. Otherwise a cage is fine in most rooms as long as not too close to a tv or window (draughts etc). I prefer having them in the living room if I can - so they don’t get overlooked if wanting to come out. Having said that our current two rarely come out before lights out - except at feeding time but I like to think they know we are around. Your basement sounds like a room that’s used a fair bit. But if it’s mostly quiet down there then noise might affect them more if they’re used to it being quiet in there. Ours are used to the regular daily noise in the main living room.

I did have one hamster in a separate room once but did worry that I couldn’t easily see him if he needed attention for some reason.

A detolf is great but I’d think carefully about if you’d prefer to have the hamster in a different room where you spend more time and then think about what kind of cage would work in there. There is a good cage (rather than tank option) that is good for a Syrian but doesn’t take up as much space as a detolf (the prevue cage in Amazon).

I would say that ideally it should be in a quiet room that you spend a lot of time in, like an office or library. However, most people don't have those types of rooms and have noisy homes, but their hamsters become used to the noises. Just give it a few days to settle in and get used everything before you try to handle it.
