Question Need a new wheel, suggestions?

Hello there!

So in 2018, I bought an 8inch Wodent Wheel from Rodipet for my Dwarf hamster. It was all well and good, but then I had to have her PTS last year, so it sat unused for a while.

I gave it a good clean for when I would get a new hammy, but noticed it was stiff to spin. I tried wrapping the bar with Teflon tape like I saw suggested here, but it didn't seem to help. Eventually I took the front washer off, and that seemed to do the trick.

Well, I got a new hamster on Saturday, and the wheel seemed to do perfectly. Until last night. It was giving off a sort of loud whirring noise (though nothing was touching it), and was a bit rattly too. The cage is in our bedroom, so it's not really ideal.

I tried looking on Rodipet again since I knew you could buy replacement parts, but it seems they've discontinued it? So I'm looking to buy a new wheel. I've seen plenty of recommendations, but all of them have some conflicting reviews, and I'm worried about spending a lot on a wheel for it to turn out to be rubbish. So, what wheels have you had luck with?

Thank you in advance!

I can highly recommend the 9” silent runner . It is silent, spins much better than the wodent wheels and is a safe sturdy wheel. It has holes in the front similar to the wodent wheel. Only comes in yellow . I’ve had the 12” one for Syrians for a few years and it is the best wheel I’ve had and the longest lasting wheel I’ve had. It’s not cheap though- but I think a good longer term investment.

It seems wodent wheels are no longer made any more. The company was taken over at one point and then ceased production.

The 9” SR is showing as out of stock at the moment but if you email them on this page they can let you know when they’re expecting stock. They are imported from the US.

It’s showing as available here but at a higher price - annoying.

The stand is very safe and sturdy but I use mine mounted to the cage bars so I can have it the height I want - above the substrate level and near the cage roof at the top. You can buy special cage attachment plates separately and they work really well - it is very stable. Another £5 though but they last forever!

This is the cage attachment kit

A cheaper alternative is the 21 Cm wood trixie wheel sold by Zooplus - it really needs painting with plastikote though to be wipe clean. It is also silent.

If you want Silent and long lasting I too highly recommend the Silent Runner, I have both the 9 inch and 12 inch wheels - Got 3 of them all in all. Expensive, but worth it.

Thank you both!

I think I'm going to bite the bullet and get the Silent Runner (I suppose I'll pay the extra to get it from the site that has it in stock, I feel bad about my boyfriend's sleep being interrupted so I'd like it ASAP)

I'm a bit sad that it's only in yellow, since I have a natural set up (my Wodent Wheel is the brown one), but I suppose I can suck it up if it actually works nicely haha :P Looking at reviews, the Trixie wooden one seems really hit or miss, and I don't want to have to get a third one if I can help it haha. So, Silent Runner it shall be!

I would also strongly recommend the Silent Runner(9 inch for dwarf species, 12 inch for Syrians). In a pinch if you really had to use one and could handle potential noise at least long enough to be able to get a Silent Runner, Comfort Wheels at least would be a functional choice(8 inch for any dwarf species, 12 inch for Syrians). Comfort Wheels may not be the quietest wheels out there but they at least do work properly!

Yes they only come in yellow The 12" one only comes in orange. But you get used to it! Very good wheels. The first time you assemble it (if it doesn't arrive ready assembled) the only thing to check is that the running track is very firmly pushed into the front and back pieces so there is no gap at all on the little plastic joining strip that holds the running track together. So once you've slotted the running track onto the back piece and pushed the front piece on, squeeze the back and front together firmly until there is no gap on the joining piece. Otherwise it can wobble and somewhere for a toe to get caught in the gap. I made that mistake first time I put one together. It seems a bit of a fiddle at first but quick and easy once you get used to it. Also no spindle which is good! The smooth side of the running track goes on the outside.
