Question Big but cheap, non barred cages?

My syrian keeps biting the bars, and I've done pretty much everything to get him to stop but he's still not happy. He's currently in a Barney cage, but unless I let him out every other day (which some days I can't do due to how late he wakes up sometimes) he bar bites/climbs. Does anyone know of a cage (preferably under £100) that's the same size as or bigger than the Barney, and has no bars? I don't have the length space for a detolf and as I live in the UK a diy bin from Walmart wouldn't work either. Also, how do you attach shelves to a non-barred cage? My boy likes to climb on shelves so it'd be a good idea to put some shelves in there. Thank you :)

I think there are some wooden style cages that are under £100. I will try and find links to them later.
If you are into diy there is a 100x50cm plastic bin from argos for around £30, it is on wheels, but you may be able to take them off, you would need to add ventilation and a lid.
I think 1 way you could add shelves would be by adding little stilts onto things e.g. little dowels

If you click on the link there are several hamster cages that are suitable. Ignore the too small ones, i am sure you know what to look for. They may be cheaper elsewhere so have a look around.

The only other options I can think of are to look out for tanks/ terrariums etc on 2nd hand websites and you may need to build a lid for it.

You could also look out for an eco living habitat 2nd hand but brand new they are over £100

edit: think Serendipity mentioned this one and I think you will need to mesh the bar spacing on the roof.

Hi again. Tank style cages do tend to be expensive. The best option under £100 is probably the maxi duna Multy. It has the same floor space. You need a freestaning platform on legs in a tank style, but thankfully there are a couple of good ones available if you don't want to make something - it is basically a shelf with legs

Unfortunately the maxi duna multy seems to be out of stock everywhere at the moment.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ferplast-Ma...3684851&sr=8-2

This is also a good option. It's just under £130 but no diy needed. It isn't as portable as the maxi duna multy as it's more like a tank. (Just remembering you mentioned going on holiday and maybe needing to leave him with relatives). Delivery is free though. It would be possibly to move it - not as heavy as an all glass tank but you'd need to be careful not to break it!

https://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/small...es_wood/437277

A cheaper alternative is the 100cm Zoozone. It's virtually the same size as the Maxi Duna Multy - but it has guinea pig bar spacing on top - wide 2cm bar spacing - so it can only be used for hamsters if you mesh the lid - which involves some diy but less than needed to make a bin cage. The downside is the lid is supposed to be very fiddly and not easy to open and close so can make noise and vibration and that can also cause stress to a hamster. Whereas the maxi duna multy has a much better lid and no meshing needed - if you can find one!

Zoozone 2 is also out of stock here. (You don't want the Zoozone 1 - that's too small).

https://www.jollyes.co.uk/zoo-zone-l...l-habitat.html

Junglepets also make a glass tank that already has a mesh lid for a hamster, and comes with a glass shelf already fitted. It's a good length (slighly longer than the barney at 4 foot) but not as deep. But that is also just under £130 and delivery costs extra I believe.

So the Marrakesch is the better option and more the size you want. If it doesn't matter if it's portable then that's a good option.

Platforms - I had one of these which are quite good - a choice of height - about 6" tall or 9" tall.

Or some people use one of these instead of a platform - has built in steps and the top step is like a small platform

Does he just chew bars or has he tried chewing the plastic cage base as well?

Noticed on your other thread you mentioned looking for something bigger. The only bigger tank style really is the Eco Habitat. It wouldn't be an easy thing to move to a different house during holidays though.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Living-Worl...00E1XWJ2O?th=1

I'd probably go with the Marrakesch for tank style, and easier move ability - it's not bigger but it's a good size.

Or - get the eco habitat but make a cheap bin cage as a holiday cage for when you need to leave him somewhere when you go on holiday. Or - would it be possible to get a petsitter instead? If your grandparents don't live far away could they just come in and feed him and do his water once a day? That's what I do if we go on holiday.

The Eco habitat has a wood base which needs protecting from pee but you can just put a hemp mat down or coroplast under the substrate if you don't want to be painting the wood base. But not plastic sheet as that isn't safe if chewed.

The other downside to the Eco habitat is it does need the lid meshing again or your hamster will find a way to the top and escape(and believe me they do!) So that's back to diy again.

Only real options then are the Marrakesch or a glass fish tank which can be very expensive - or the Junglepets glass tank. Glass tanks are heavy and difficult to move.

If you did get the eco habitat I think all you have to do is mesh the lid on the inside, I am getting one and will be doing that and hope to adapt it with myabe handles and hinges to make it easier to use the lid, but you don't have to do that. I am also painting it in plastikote to protect it from wee stains and then as Serendipity said i will put a hemp mat on the floor base too.

I would say with the marrakesh, again just make sure you can fit your wheel in due to the height as it is only 38cm, and i think some wheels on stands will be this tall too.

I think all the 11" wheels fit in the MArrakesch but not the 12" silent runner

He doesn't normally chew the plastic; I think he's done it once, but that was a few months ago
