Living World Eco Habitat Cage
Hi all,
So Twinkle is chewing his bars like mad, he only does it when I am in the room, he stops as soon as I leave the room and switch the light off. He lives in the living room and I do not have another room in the house to put him in and I don't want to spend all night in my bedroom so he doesn't hurt himself chewing after he has been freeroaming.
So, I am moving him into the living world eco habitat.
I can take him out of his cage and put him into his same sized plastic bin cage and he is happy as larry running on the wheel and running through tunnels and never tries to escape, so I hope this type of cage works for him.
Anyway, my question is does anyone know about this cage and do I need to plastikote the bottom of it to help make it last longer or use a hemp mat as a liner at the bottom.
Thanks.

Re: Living World Eco Habitat Cage
I have heard of people putting correx/coropast on the bottom - protects the bottom of the cage. It's plasticized corrugated cardboard basically. Wipe clean and easy to replace. Hemp mat would be nice but it can get pee soaked.
I bought some sheets of coroplast on ebay (used them to make a playpen at one time).

That is a good idea thanks Serendipity, must admit I had thought of that too, but then forgotten about it
Do you think it would be ok as one big flat piece or better if i scored it and raised the sides of it all around, like they do in a guinea pig C&C cage, but obivoulsy wouldn't need to be as high up on the sides.

Having the coroplast scored and creating raised edges would lead to plastic in the cage that can be chewed which is unfortunately not safe. If it was flat and carefully fitted to be completely chew proof that might work though.

Thanks Amityville that would make sense. although I guess it depends on the hamster as my hamsters have plastic wheels and tubes and in the past I had sand in an old plastic icecream tub which never got chewed.
Although, if something is blocking a cornner you know what hamsters can be like, they will chew anything to get out

Re: Living World Eco Habitat Cage
I think it would be better just on the base as well without edges. It's not like the hard plastic toys are made of and probably wouldn't be good to chew! It does cut really easily though. It's mainly the wood base you want to protect. It's not that cheap though - I bought A1 sheets for my playpen - bought quite a few though and it came to about £25.
You can get one really big sheet here for £16 and cut it to size.

Re: Living World Eco Habitat Cage
Thanks for that Serendipity. Again, like my other post re the other cage, I will see what I think when the cage arrives. I am wondering if plastikote would be safer, although I think I read it is already covered in something, but I may have got that muddled up with another cage. Looked at so many recently, my head is spinning.

Re: Living World Eco Habitat Cage
I wondered about plastikoting the base as well - I don't think it is treated. The Marrakesch is the one where the wood is wipe clean/treated Plastikote plus a hemp mat should do it. I noticed rodipet sell something like plastikote now as well - in a bigger tin. Auro.

Re: Living World Eco Habitat Cage
Thanks again Serendipity, yes maybe plastikote and a hemp mat, I just don't want to buy these expensive cages and then they get ruined. I would rather spend a bit more money and make them last a long time.

Re: Living World Eco Habitat Cage
Didn't you have an Eco Habitat already? Or am I getting mixed up with someone else?
