Or maybe not necessary because as you say, really deep substrate isn't necessary. Six inches is probably fine as with a cage. If house was on top of that he almost certainly wouln't be able to climb out. But yes keeping the house away from the side holes sounds good. How about centre back? Then you can see him going in and out of the house. The platform for a wheel doesn't need to be very tall - it could sit at substrate level - just to keep it steady. But then you'd need the wheel at the back as well to be away from the side holes I guess.

I have seen hamsters piling all their substrate in one corner as a hill to climb to get out! Maybe when he is settled in the cage he won't be trying to get out each time - so it could be a time thing.

Don't worry about the video - there is time to change things when he's settled I'm sure it's fine anyway. Always interesting to see how people set things up.
I have the holes as high as they go, which is just above half way approx 10 inches up, if you put the perspex sheets in the other way it would only be 7 inches. I just don't get why they aren't at the top, I suppose they expect people to only put a couple of inches of bedding in maybe???

I just measured, his bedding goes from 6-9 inches so higher than I thought.
I meant centre back, when I said middle of the cage, I'm not sure hamsters like it like that, I noticed when I moved my hamsters houses like that in the past they covered the front doors up every night, I moved them back into the corner and they didn't cover them up anymore.

Right my little hamster friends, here is the link to setting up the eco habitat

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYUtUq9eqzU&t=8s

I have to admit it looks a lot different now, and I am a lot happier with it than I am in this video, now I have the lid hinged, I can hang some items from the ceiling, just have to make sure Twinkle isn't in them when I lift the lid

I did change the layout after this video and I have changed it some more since. I will try and find photos if I can. I filmed this at the end of July/begin of Aug, it took me that long to edit it and release the video. I hadn't hinged the lid at the time of filming all of this.

Also, I have to admit that I spooked Twinkle out a bit with this cage change, I was rushing to get everything across from his old cage before a heatwave hit and I didn't think and I set it up how I wanted it to be, when I could have made it easier on Twinkle and try and set it up more like his old cage (although I didn't have shelves in it like his barred cage) Ahh well lesson learnt. He was ok after a few days. I just decided it was no different to when a rescue hamster arrives and everything is new.

The setup is amazing. It's a shame the ventilation holes are so low as they limit the bedding depth.

Is it the large (approx. 120cm) Eco Habitat? I might buy one for two of my gerbils but I can only find the 100cm version on Amazon.

Thanks Sushi, it was the 100cm one, I would have loved the 120cm but haven't seen it for sale for a long time, maybe more than a year. My ultimate aim is to one day live somewhere that I can link two of these cages together to make the ultimate hamster cage.

I guess I could always replace the sides with new perspex and put holes at the top. More expense though, so will see how it goes.

I'm not sure if it would be suitable for Gerbils, don't they chew everything? There are wooden corner posts on the inside. If you look at the video where I put the cage together you should be able to see what I mean. That might help you make a decision as to whether it would be suitable or not.

I thought it must have been the 120cm one as you managed to get so much stuff into it. It will still be an upgrade for my gerbils though. I thought about buying strips of perspex and gluing them somehow over the holes.

I didn't notice the posts before. The pair I'm thinking of upgrading are less destructive than most so I think they would be ok but certainly there are some gerbils I wouldn't trust for a minute in this cage.

You could always get some mini mosaic tiles or something similar and stick them on the wooden bits.

I think it's 60cm wide(?), so wider than any of the barred hamster cage 100*50.

In the end I got him a lighter falcon pie tray and it is currently on top of his house. I think you see it right at the end of the video. Nope, I just checked, it must be in next weeks video.

But, he tends to use the one in his maze more when he is out free roaming.

This three level step type of shelves, did you make them yourself? I've never seen them before.

Now i'm really curious to see a photo of the current set up!

The platform is from zooplus, it's great because they swivel.

I've got myself in a right pickle with my photos! I will try and find some pics and post in the next day or 2.
