I do have some proper sharp sewing scissors, I wonder how that would work, i fear this may be a slow process cutting these mats down to size.
I also have a sharp craft knife.
Oh well, will find out on wednesday when they arrive.

Any scissors should cut the thinner ones. The thick ones, even my sharpest scissors used to struggle with - it was doable but slow work.

Cool Re: Living World Eco Habitat Cage

Apropos hemp mats. Is it possible to sew them with a sewing maching? If yes, which thickness would be best?
I want to make an interior ceiling cover for Ozzy's 133l bin cage but one that folds back. An awning like i had on a VW camper would be what i really want but can't see anybody making one hamster sized.

My apologies Luna, don't mean to hog your thread.

Unfortunately that could be unsafe as it would use cotton thread - which has led to amputations and all sorts of a hamster chews it or gets their foot in some. The hemp mat is occasionally “shredded” a bit rather than chewed - it is supposed to be safe if chewed and I’ve never had a problem. But if chewed it would expose the cotton thread more. Same issues with all cloth and hammocks eg. The Fuzzbutts hammocks are the safest for no visible stitching and being well made but only if the hamster doesn’t chew the fleece.

For covering the top of the cage I just used to use one of the large hemp mats on top of the cage . Worked well. The thick ones are also very good for putting under a cage to keep it sitting firm and not sliding around. Probably gives a bit of insulation in winter too.

He wouldn't be able to reach it. It's only for overhead cover because the bin cage is tall but i'll look into the Fuzzbutts hammocks. Thanks for the tip.

Finally, Twinkles new cage is arriving next Wednesday, only took a month and 4 complaints to Amazon, should have been here the week I ordered it.

In the meantime, since we lost Star Twinkle has stopped chewing his bar cage, I don't think he was getting enough free roaming whilst I was trying to look after her although I still got him out it obviously wasn't enough for my young boy.
Anyway, he is still getting his new cage as it is slightly larger but I was so relieved he stopped bar chewing.

In relation to sewing hemp mats, I used a large needle and sewed them by hand using twine.

Meanwhile, though the loss of Star is sad I'm glad that Twinkle seems happier.

No problem Luna. It sounds like Twinkle is going to have a fantastic set up so I'm looking forward to pictures and updates xo
