Those sealants seem fine, though I can't personally give any specific advice on exact brands and such for sealants just that they should be free of additives and 100% silicon.

Yes, you really do need to do the sealing outside - it isn't exactly something you can avoid at all. Silicon as I mentioned is fume producing while curing which takes 2-3 days minimum. You really don't want any pets or yourself breathing in the fumes as they are very harmful, but once it is fully cured you can have help bringing it back inside and it will not have fumes once the silicon is fully cured!

The first one you linked was one I had bookmarked when I was thinking of using sealant but I was put off by the strong fumes mentioned in the reviews. Even though it says it's safe for fish, as Amity says, until it's fully cured it will give off strong fumes.

I know you're worried about it leaking but personally I wouldn't seal it. An empty tank with liquid in is bound to have some seeping underneath that gap but a tank full of substrate won't I am sure. Hamsters really don't pee that much! The bottom of my cage is always bone dry!

I would just see how you go without sealing it and try not to worry x

Thanks guys, went with just the hemp mat Forgetting I was allergic to hemp I'll be ok once I have other substrate covering it.

I managed to cut the 0.5cm thickness mat easily, not sure the 1cm thick would have been so easy.

Serendipity, I will try and not worry, it's just a very expensive cage to ruin it straight away

I honestly can't believe none of you twigged what I was doing when I asked about this cage, but I got this for a hamster that is not a syrian ohhh who would have ever thought I would move away from syrian hamsters (not me), they are still my favourite hamster but I thought I would try a different species. Anyway, here are a few videos that I thought might be helpful, unboxing and putting the cage together (on my own!!! it can be done)

This is me setting it up with some new items. I might do a separate post re the special hide I bought. It is just gorgeous.

I really like the cage, it is very solid and heavy, love the lid opening/closing mechanism, they say that 2 people needed to put it together, I managed to do it on my own slow and steady, and had to find a way to manage that - by pressing it up against something solid, to hold it in place.

I have changed a few things around since filming, and i will post some photos later and then if anyone has any advice for me or think I have left something out I am open to friendly advice.

At the moment I am not 100% sure what I am adopting, but obviously it will be some sort of smaller hamster, I will keep you posted when I know

Love the set up! Looks like a fairytale scene and all that's missing now is one very lucky dwarf.

I love that setup - it's so great that with glass cages you can put tunnels up against the front, so you can see the hamster in the tunnel.

Thanks so much, I have been doubting my cage setup abilities recently, I see so many cages setup that I think are way better than mine.

So here are some pics when I changed the setup a little bit,

This way round there is more access to the sandbath and I was worried the ceramic hides would fall over and squash a hamster, am I being too neurotic?

No, you're not being neurotic. I have this mushroom (lucky you to get a red one, i only ever managed to get the green ones) and other ceramic hides and they sit on top of submerged Ferplast guinea pig house minus the front panel. Dwarfs are like bulldozers and will dig and topple things over.
