Default How to clean stinky wheel?

So, I’m not really sure if this is the right section to put the post in or not, but I recently bought a 2nd hand silent runner wheel as it was quite cheap and I thought to myself I will just clean it and it’ll be good as new... boy was I wrong. I got it today and as soon as I opened the box the smell hit me, it was an intense hamster urine smell.

I decided to take it apart to clean it and as soon as I popped off the front I could see a thick layer of yellowy orange dried pee (sorry for the image, but at least you didn’t have to smell it haha) it looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in years. To start off with I used an old dry toothbrush to scrape off all the dried pee from the track which worked pretty well, then I used a vinegar and water solution on a paper towel to clean the surface and get rid of anything I missed. I did the same thing with the back and front pieces, in the ridge where the track slides in. A lot of flakes came out and the vinegar solution which I poured in the gap helped dissolve/remove the solid pee a bit, but I couldn’t clean it completely because the bristles on the toothbrush weren’t quite long enough to get to the back (it’s a very thin gap). I did what I could and it looks brand new now, and the smell has lessened, but I still gag when I get within a foot of it. I’ve heard of using baking soda or something to get rid of the smell but I’m not really sure how. Any ideas of how to get rid of hamster pee smell? And also if it doesn’t go away, will it be harmful to use it with a hammie?

Oh dear you, sounds like you got more than you bargained for.

you could try putting it in a bag for a few days with a load of bicarb soda to soak up the smell and see if that works. You want bicarbonate soda not baking powder, baking powder has bicarb soda in it but is mixed with other things. It is the bicarb soda that will soak up the smell - hopefully.

You could also try and soak with a few Milton sterilizing tablets thrown in or Steradent tablets which cleans flasks and dentures and no, i wouldn't give a smelly wheel to a hamster.
