What is a good cage for a roborovski hamster?
I'm thinking of getting a robo and was hoping to get some advice on cages. I have a barney cage already and I really like it. But I have only used it for a Syrian in the past and I'm unsure if it would be suitable. Would a robo be able to squeeze through the bars? The bars are 7mm apart but I have read that sometimes robos, especially babies are able to get through small bar spacing. I try to adopt my hamsters so the robo will likely not be a baby when I get it, but it's possible. Would it be safer to buy a different cage? If so what cages would you recommend? Thanks

Tanks could be a good fit with a screen top on them than you won’t have to worry about it squeezing through the bar. As long as you keep up with taking out soiled bedding ventilation shouldn’t be an issue.

The barney is a great cage for a roborovski hamster.

7mm isn't even 1/3 of an inch so it should be fine. Plenty people keep robos in 1/2 inch bar spacing cages(12.7 mm)!

Agree the Barney bar spacing is fine. It would need careful setting up because it is too tall for a Robo but you can get round that. Making a full level is one option - another is to effectively reduce the height by having substrate deeper than the base. You can achieve this by putting cardboard round the inside bars although I have sometimes just piled the substrate up against the bars anyway (with Fitch) it doesn’t fall out with the narrow bar spacing. Also make sure any hard items can’t be fallen on - they could go on or under a shelf or have something else over them (I had a rat sputnik over a hard toy).
The only really issue would be the top door as it can have a bit of a gap under it - you might need to clip it down with something. There are sometimes slightly larger gaps at the corner but I used cable ties there - I think they were only about 8mm anyway.
The top bar on the little front doors has a gap of about 1cm at the top. It’s unlikely they would notice but I put cable ties along that gap as well to fill it in.

Re: What is a good cage for a roborovski hamster?
With quite deep substrate and taller toys like cork logs on top it reduces the height and means they can only land on soft substrate or a cork log without much of a drop- they are so tiny they can easily be injured by falls from a height. So any edges like along the edge of shelves, I put hemp mat to soften them and also stuck it onto the ladder.
