Default Housing Hamsters

I'm not sure this is under the right thread. If it is not, sorry, just let me know where to move it.

Anyway, I currently have a female Syrian hamster and am planning on getting another Syrian... possibly male. Not convinced yet might be female depends on what is available. I have a small room so their cages will be pretty close to each other, but I do have a divider up between them so they won't be able see each other. Will this be okay?

Also, I'll be sure to post pictures of my new fur baby when I get it! I'm super excited!

I would have thought so. I also have more hamsters in one room and they live in close proximity in rescues and shops.

Looking forward to see photos of your hamsters.

Thank you! I know some rodents keeping males and females close to each other can make them go into heat more often. I wanted to make sure hamsters weren’t the same.

Many people do keep a few hamsters in close proximity. One thing though is it might drive the male a bit bonkers when the female comes in heat. You would need very secure cages! On the other hand if they don't know what they're missing - maybe they would just fall in love! I am not so sure on this aspect as to whether it is ok to have male and female in close proximity, I've only had males. It might be better to have two females.

I don't think it would make a female go into heat more often - they have a heat every 4 days as it is.

So update on it. I found a hamster someone was rehoming due to moving and it is a Campbell male. Since the Campbell and Syrian can't breed, I shouldn't have to worry about him smell her in heat and getting... excited and going nuts, right?
