There are various cheaper substrates you can get in bulk that are paper based also. Boxo (brown) in the US and Fitch in the Uk. I use Fitch - only comes in white though.
I live in the UK so therefore Pets at Home is my only close commercial retailer. However, I can order things online. I have seen good reviews for Kaytee CC the normal version but apparently the natural version is not as good, according to the Pets at Home website.

Personally I prefer the white Kaytee C&C. I found the coloured ones had a bit of a dye/ink aroma - although it wore off if the bedding was aired - and I have a sensitive nose! But then so do hamsters. I get Fitch which is online delivery only. The 10kg bag - not too big to store indoors and you can squish it under a chair or something. It is very similar to Kaytee - it’s recycled food grade paper. I actually prefer to the Kaytee and it lasts a lot longer - especially for a larger cage. Just google fitch pet bedding - I’ll link the 10kg bag. Amazon sell it as well by they charge a bit more and it still gets delivered direct from the manufacturer. It’s a very popular bedding for small animals.

The Kaytee is perhaps a bit more convenient as it’s compressed but works out more expensive. I love Fitch though and so do our hamsters- they take bits for their nest - it is white as well. The 10kg bag lasts me at least 6 months.

I wouldn’t worry about the colour of the bedding for a natural theme - you can just add natural items like cork, vine branches, Miller sprays and wood houses etc. You could have a sand area as well maybe. I get the JR farm sand on Zooplus - comes in quite a big bag so works out economical.

Cool! I will check Fitch out, and the sand. I was going to go to Homebase and get some play sand, then filter and bake it, but if this works out cheaper then that’s great!

Play sand will always work out cheaper by weight, even though it does take a little extra effort to make it fully safe through the rinsing, sifting, and baking.
