New cage, help?
Hi, we need a new cage to our dwarf , and I`m confused. I have read that hamsters dont climb in nature but climb when they are bored. As I`m going to chose cage for a dwarf, I`m so insecure of what I should chose. What is best?

Re: New cage, help?
I suggest DIY cages or detolf cages, because they are usually the biggest. Bin cages are good too. If you are looking to buy a cage, I suggest you buy an aquarium cage. Those are good for dwarf hamsters. And if you are concerned about your hamster getting bored, provide lots of chews, hideouts, and toys in the cage.

Plenty of floor space is good. Height is not relevent except to make sure a decent sized wheel fits.
Zooplus sell wonderful cages such as the barney, the alaska and the hamster heaven.

Re: New cage, help?
What country are you in? Hamsters need low height and plenty of floor space. They will climb but aren't good at getting down so can have injuries from falls. A barred cage is fine as long as it's not too tall. For a dwarf hamster you'd be looking at something minimum 70cm by 40cm and no taller than about 38cm with plenty of depth of substrate (cushions landings). The Hamster Heaven is a good sized bar cage with good access (if you remove the penthouse and external tubes). The Ikea Samla bin 78cm is ok for a bin cage. Personally I think they do better with front access (ie a cage) than top access.
In my experience hamsters only climb to a) get to something (eg if there isn't sufficient ramps etc to reach a shelf) or b) to see if they can escape! They don't really do it for fun. They may do it when a bit stressed - eg after a cage move but will settle down again.

Re: New cage, help?
You asked about the Hamster heaven cage in a previous thread so I'm guessing you could get that? That is a good example of a suitable cage for a dwarf ham (if used without the penthouse & tubes) a good size, not too high so little or no risk of falls & a deep enough base for substrate plus the bonus of the large front door.
