Default Playpen

Hello!
Can anyone recommend a suitable playpen for a Syrian hamster?

For a Syrian you'd probably do better to make one as most playpens sold for small animals are too small for a Syrian & not really escape proof.
You could try something like this Stylish playpen & make it whatever size suits you & your ham.

I can't recommend one because my hamsters don't like playpens. I have a 133l bin cage with meshed windows as a playpen box for two of my dwarfs. It has different toys from their own cages like a flying saucer wheel, a long bendy plastic tube etc which i change from time to time. One dwarf also likes running on the futon with cushions to dive under and uses me as a climbing frame, the Robo won't come out and for my Syrian i have hamster proofed a room because he only likes free roaming.

I would suggest for you to make a playpen from cardboard boxes until you find out whether or not your hamster likes to go in one. You could connect boxes with plastic water bottles and create tunnels, runs, play areas and whatever you like. I did that when i first got my Syrian but most of the time he would just sit and sulk ignoring my elaborate creations which took up most of the lounge!

I have bought the Trixie wire panel play pen and wouldn't recommend it because it is very fiddly to put together and not very secure.
Some people use a plastic kiddies ball pit you can get from Amazon.
A wooden framed playpen from Getzoo i think it is would be the option i'd go for if i'd want to buy one or make a wooden framed one myself.

I have a playlist on playpen ideas you might want to check out.

Like Ria says you might want to start off with a big cardboard box and see how it goes, this will most probably at some point get chewed but can be replaced for free.

The problem with the metal barred playpens is that a lot of hamsters can climb them and escape, some people turn them upside down so the material floor becomes the ceiling and they can;t escape, but you can't really interact with your hamster if you do that.

The best thing I have found is a big plastic storage box - the one I use is on wheels. Not ideal if you don't have the room for it.

You can always use a bath or just secure a safe area of your house. I block areas off with long pieces of cardboard that can then fold back down again and slide away.

Whatever you end up using/buying always make sure they are supervised as they can escape or hurt themselves.

Thanks. The ones on amazon look a bit flimsy to be honest and our hamster seem to be a bit of a climber at the moment. We want some where my daughter can interact with her newish hamster safely. I did think about a big plastic box but it’s another thing to store!

i would start off with a cardboard box then and you can alway collapse it down when not in use.
