Default How big cage for my dwarf?

Hi, A question from norway here. We have a dwarfhamster that need a new cage.

1. How big cage in cm do a dwarf need?
2. Can I use a cage with bars just at the top, or will that stress the hamster?

Thanks

A good size is around 80x50cm & something like 35-40cm high to allow enough height for the wheel with substrate below, I wouldn't go smaller than that, a larger cage is ok as long as it is set up well without too much open space.
A tank style cage with barred or mesh top or a barred cage are both fine.

1. 70x40cm and above is a good size for most dwarf hamsters. There will always be individuals that need more or less than that. It also needs to be high enough to fit 6 inches of bedding and a 20cm or bigger wheel, but not so high that the hamster could be injured if it fell.

2. Not necessarily. I have a Robo in a Duna Multy which only has bars at the top and she's fine, in fact I don't think she would be as comfortable in a barred cage. Some hamsters like to be able to climb though, and if they are used to a barred cage they might struggle to adjust to a non-barred cage. Barred cages are also more likely to have front access which is very useful, especially with more timid hamsters. It depends on the hamster whether a cage with just bars at the top would be appropriate.

My roborovski dwarf has a cage of 75cmx 40cm and is very happy in that. I probably wouldn't recommend going smaller than this...although dwarf hamsters are small this doesnt mean they need a small cage as they still have lots of energy 😊
