Why bake play sand?

I don't think you should use diatomaceous earth in the cage anywhere as the fine dust can be a problem if inhaled which it probably would be if they're digging in the sand.

What is that and why do you add it?

Diatomaceous earth is a type of very fine sand that is composed of fossilised algae. Because of the texture of the tiny microscopic particles, it is a natural defence against insects and parasites. It does tend to be a bit dusty though because of the fineness of the soil.

I would personally not be using diatomaceous earth without confirmed insects/parasites. While it is safe to ingest(in reasonable amounts), it is a dusty substance as cypher mentioned so it would be best to limit the direct use to whenever it is absolutely necessary. To be completely fair it is much better than synthetic pesticides as far as safety goes(and those pests will never be able to build a resistance to it as an added bonus)!

I gave all my three little ones a sand bath change without diatomaceous earth this morning. I'll possibly use it IF I suspect mites in future but then only as a temporary measure and only a quarter teaspoon mixed into the sand.
