The silent runner (not silent spinner) doesn't have drainage holes except the auto clean track which wouldn't be suitable for a ham, I have seen something on a couple of German sites about hams getting caught in the join but tbh if the wheel is assembled properly I don't see how that could happen, I've used them for years now with several hams & never had a problem.
Sorry about the link btw, don't know what happened there or why I didn't notice before! It should have been this.

It's way too difficult to find safe hamster products in general I think.
The centre joining line isn't a problem but saying that, all my hamsters have wheels with a solid running surface. I use the spare Silent Spinner in a temporary cage but have covered the holes with car stickers. They are waterproof, washable and don't come off.

Cypher, Ria,
I'm sorry I don't know how to reply to more than one quote in a post so am replying this way Probably I wasn't the best with describing the holes, or maybe I have an old model. The spinner I have has 3 holes where the track halves connect. I couldn't think of a way to cover those openings so his nails or toes wouldn't get caught, so bought the other wheel. But car stickers would cover them well so that is a great idea I think. Seeing bloody wheels (honestly) made me not use a wheel with openings. I don't share as it's graphic but can share an instance privately. I just think people with spinners - if they are like the one I had should be careful.

Silent Spinners are a safety hazard, even though there is some hesitance on the forum to fully accept that.

Silent Runners are definitely different than Silent Spinners. They're the safest wheel design I've seen on the market - no open front so hamsters don't go flying off(typically a dwarf specific issue especially robos), no spindle(great for long haired hamsters in particular), and a completely solid running surface.

I've seen some pretty horrifying images in relation to injuries caused directly by Silent Spinner wheels. They are the stuff of nightmares which no pet owner wants to see, and while they may not be something we see much if at all in the hamster community we do need to be aware of it and not try to hide the existence of inherent safety flaws that come with the Silent Spinner and all wheels with the same type of design(multiple piece running surface with any gap at all).

If your only option is a pet store wheel, Comfort Wheels are the safest choice. They do have a spindle which isn't ideal(not a problem for all hamsters though) and they can be noisy - however, Silent Spinners tend not to stay silent anyways unlike Silent Runners. The 8 inch Comfort Wheel is the proper size for dwarf hamsters, while Syrians have to use the 12 inch Comfort Wheel. Flying saucer wheels aren't a good choice as they don't offer a natural running position despite marketing claims!

AmityvilleHams, Cypher, Littlephodopusmom, and Ria P, thanks for your answers and for clearing up hamster wheel terms! The Silent Spinner vs. Silent Runner is pretty sneaky... I'll definitely make sure to double check.

cypher,
My dwarf didn't like the bathtub the first time we tried, so we avoided putting her in there. However, when she got older she stopped wanting to run around the floor (she used to absolutely love running free) and would instead climb up our arms [we would have to move a tonne of stuff around to make a hamster safe space... then move it back, just for her to climb up our arms? Nah.]. She didn't want to go into the rejected upgrade cage... she would climb up our arms. She wanted to lay down and get petted... except if we were trying to clean some of her cage she would be like "what are you doing? can I see?" and I didn't want to subject her to watching us clean her cage. (Living through remodelling construction is traumatic enough for a human!)
One day it was past time to give her cage a little clean, but we were two people short (one worked that day and the other was in the infectious stage of a cold)... Sticking her with one person to play would not have been viable as it would take x3 long for one person to do everything and by then she would be desperately running to her unavailable pee corner. So we set up the tub with towels from the last time we played with her and some toys, and stuck her in. We pretended to leave and snuck back to watch her and she was a-ok, investigating and playing. We cleaned her house and came back, and she was still a-ok. We still avoided putting her in there unnecessarily though.

littlephodopusmom,
I'm curious as to what we'll get too haha!
Also, we have no idea when we'll get the new hamster! Thanks to the "hamsterpocalypse", we just got on a list of unknown size to get one... (we didn't get on the list earlier because we didn't want to end up with a second hamster and not enough time to engulf both in endless love). So if she (or he!) comes sooner rather than later, we may not have all the accessories... but she will 100% have a house, lots of substrate, nesting material (toilet paper), food, water, wheel, some chew toys, and possibly some improvised toilet paper tube stuff.
