Help with securing cage.
I own a Barney cage from Zooplus, and I have came across a problem. The cage won’t shut properly on the top, probably due to how many times I needed to open it. I have had my hamster named Whipper Snapper for over half a year. Is there anything I could use to secure the top? Clips perhaps? He doesn’t try to climb the top of the cage, but I would feel safer with something closing it, especially since my brother is thinking about getting a cat.
Thank you all!

Re: Help with securing cage.
I use bulldog clips on my barney cage. Not the big top door because that still closes properly, but on the two small front doors. That serves two purposes, firstly opening and closing them a lot has meant that I am concerned the grip may not be as firm as before, and also it makes certain that I do not forget to close the door!

Re: Help with securing cage.
Sorry to jump in on this thread but I'm unsure of how to start a new one. 😅
I have an Ikea Detolf enclosure and I made a lid for it but I'm afraid the hamster will just push up against it and climb out as it's not very heavy.
Does anyone else with a detolf have the same problem, and any idea how to fix? Or will the hamster not even try to climb out or be able to? I plan on having one section with very high bedding for burrowing.
Thanks all!

Re: Help with securing cage.
I used to worry about that with my Barney cage but none of ours bothered trying to escape so I stopped bothering tying the lid down! I found bulldog clips and pegs just popped off or didn’t really close the gap effectively. I think in the end I used sisal string and just tied the lid to the bars at either side but that is a pain if you need to open and close it regularly. You could put a big book on top? I also found that the gap wasn’t actually as big as it looked and less than 1cm. But if you can get your index finger under it then a hamster could probably squeeze through.

Re: Help with securing cage.
Do you think a detolf terrarium needs securing? We've made two lids, one to cover each half. I don't THINK a hamster could lift one of them up, but having seen some of the things my previous dwarf got up to that I thought she wouldn't be able to do, I'd like to be sure!

My Syrian managed to lift the lid of her terrarium! Currently I've got books laid on top but I'm looking for another solution

You've got me worried now, peculiarplanets - and I thought I was being over-cautious!
I've just seen some self-adhesive magnetic clips on amazon. Our detolf has a custom-made wooden bar running around the top, and we could fix one-side of these to the bar and the other to inside of the lid. The gap created by the magnets is only 1.6 mm, so there shouldn't be any problem with escape by that means. They will resist a force of 1.6 kg northwards, so that might be a possible solution. They will be hidden when the lids are closed - smaller and neater than a pile of books.

Re: Help with securing cage.
You could put a little bolt between the two detolf lid frames. That would attach them together so make it a much heavier option to try and lift from underneath!
