Question Cage size for a syrian?

I'm not necessarily looking into getting a syrian right now, but I was just wondering what size everyone recommends for a syrian. I recently made a bincage that's around 670-700~ square inches (it tapers slightly towards the bottom) and it feels like a perfect fit for my roborovski! I've never seen an adult syrian in person, but I feel as if even a cage this size may feel slightly restrictive for a syrian, keeping in mind how big their accessories are. Just curious on other people's perspectives I guess!

Personally I wouldn't go smaller than 100 x 50cm - which equates to something like 774 sq inches off the top of my head.

If the time came you could always try your bin cage out with a syrian but with the option that you know you might need to get a bigger cage if need be.

Also you say the bin tapers off towards the bottom, but if the top of the substrate is high up and level with the widest part of the cage- that would technically be the floor space - does that make sense. No one ever seems to take that into account. That't the level the hamster will be running around on and where you place most of your hamsters items.

I personally prefer barred cages with good front access. The minimum size for a Syrian is generally considered to be about 80 x 50cm or 75 x 45 Cm. Something like the Hamster Heaven (although that cage is much better without all the plastic contents, tubes and penthouse etc. Popular Syrian cages are the Alaska, Barney and Alexander cages on Zooplus (84 x 46, 100 x 54 and 100 x 50 respectively). And the Savic hamster plaza (100 x 50). I like the cages that have a big front door as it makes interaction with the hamster a lot easier. That would be either the Alaska, Hamster Heaven or Hamster Sky (better than the hamster heaven as less plastic and space for a big wheel. Or the Savic plaza.

A good sized bin cage for a Syrian is the 143 litre rub bin - but that costs more than the Alaska cage!

I have a robo and Syrians. My Syrians are 5x the size of my robo. Look at the palm of your hand, a Syrian would fill that space, unless you have huge hands.

Smallest cage I have for a Syrian is 70x50 I think. Ideally that'd be ok temporary accommodation. Unfortunately once you have a 11" wheel, bowls, a hide and some chew toys there's hardly any room. :/

In the future, any Syrian I have would be in a indoor guinea pig/rabbit cage and mesh the bars. They're typically 100x50 and I've seen them for £30.

Just for comparison purposes I have added 2 photos of my Syrian setups. Grey base is the smaller one, one with the pink wheel is a zoozone and is a guinea pig cage. You can see which one is better IMO.

I usually go for 100 x 50 for a Syrian - their stuff can fill it up and it’s a good size for them. 80 x 50 can be fine depending on how you set it up. Both our last Syrians were in a 100 x 50 Cm cage but I have just moved our current Syrian to an 80 x 50 cage for a number of reasons. Some people start a baby hamster in a smaller cage for taming (ie 70 x 40) and then upgrade them to a bigger cage later. It’s not an easy decision but you can always sell a cage in if you need to upgrade.

I have a zoozone for one of my dwarfs, but it's not meshed as I have ran into difficulty finding a good mesh for the lid. Do you remember what mesh that is? And I can definitely see the difference here, and I feel like I would not really like putting a syrian in a cage that I felt was small so definitely no syrian for me for a while

My Syrian has an aquarium that's 100x50. I found mine on a local website for second hand stuff and it cost me €20, so that's not that bad!

Is it the larger Zoozone? That is fine for a Syrian. The smaller one wouldn’t fit an 11” wheel.

I am not that up on mesh but B&q should have a range. 1cm square mesh is the usual size.

It's the medium zoozone I think, and my local B&Q has a mesh that I used for my new bin cage, however the only mesh they have there is a single panel so I may grab it if I'm ever down there again but as it stands the set up is fine with no mesh as he would much rather be underground than climbing out

Still a bit risky with those big gaps in the lid! Many hamsters have escaped! He might scale his wheel or water bottle. They should sell mesh on a big roll and you just get a piece cut to the size you want.
