Hi everyone. I'm a first time hamster owner. We received two Syrian Hamsters as unexpected gift for my sons 4th birthday 3 weeks ago. So now I'm leaning how to take good care of them. They were gifted in one small Kaytee cage.

After doing my reading I've learned that they need larger space to feel happy and shouldn't be kept together. So currently they are separated in two storage containers that are about twice the size of the cage with top covered with chicken wire+hardware cloth as a temporary option.
All hamster cages available I saw online are not large enough. I considered going DIY and making storage container cages for them.
But then I found Ferplast Ferret Tower Two-Story Ferret Cage XXL on Craigslist for a really good price and only 20 minutes away from me. So I got it with the idea to get it modified for my hamsters.

Would appreciate any information or ideas on cage modifications.
I read online that 0.5" bar spacing is fine for Syrians. Should I still cover walls with hardware cloth?
One of them is I a climber and the cages are too tall for them. So I'm worried about them falling and getting injured. I'm thinking of diving each cage into two levels by using cut out plexiglass sheet and connecting it to the cage walls with cable ties. Then connecting the levels with either tubes or stairs for them to move up and down.
That way the cage will be safe and they will get more space. Ideas on what's the best way to get it done?
Thanks
