Question Good lids for a detolf?

Hello there everyone! I am going to get a male syrian in march and he will be living in my bedroom, where my six year old male cat also sleeps regularly. I would probably consider my cat to be a semi-regular hunter but he's very docile with humans. I want my hamster to live in an ikea detolf as that is the cage that seems to be the most universally recognised as good, but the lack of a lid will be an issue. My cat won't be allowed in my room unsupervised of course but i still think a lid would be a wise idea and anyone who has made one and can give me any tips would be much appreciated!!!

Hello,

Your Ikea Detolf is a very good option for your hamster to live in. The item doesn't come with a lid and you can't really find lids for your ikea detolf. Why not consider making your own DIY lid. Wood or plastic is a good option! Just simply measure the length of your cage for where you want to place the lid and just get a piece of plastic or wood and cut out the correct measurements. I would recommend wood for the lid due to it being more secure. Then drill holes to let air come in and out for your hamster to breathe.

For your cat, no matter what, you should not let your cat in your room without supervision. Cats will like to catch and kill mouses or any small rodents like Mouse, Hamsters and gerbils. Keep your hamster in a safe quiet place where it can adjust to the environment after you bring it home.

Good luck with your hamster!

I made lists for my Detolf very easily. I made two lids and tied cord at the end of each one to lift them on and off.

As Mimi can get up high and I was worried about her lifting the lids up when she was younger (she's 200g and quite determined!) i found some baby cupboard catches. These might give an extra level of security to your lids with the cat, especially if you just use hardware store pine like I did: The sticky bit you attach to the glass and then the pad goes on the lid and the plastic catch beds round the right angle perfectly. They look like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dreambaby-M...s-Transparent/

I haven't figured out how to insert pics on here else I'd show you Mimi's house!
