If a hamster has had any kind of infectious illness I wouldn't reuse wooden items but if not I just soak them thoroughly in disinfectant (I use unscented safe4) & completely dry before use, some wooden things can fall apart if they get soaked but most things are ok.

Thanks, Cypher. No, she's not had anything infectious at all. Do the toys need rinsing in clean water after soaking?

I've almost decided on a cage - I think it has to be the Detolf which I absolutely love (and we can house our overflowing book collection on shelves underneath). I like the Exo Terra Terrarium too - but at nearly four times the cost, perhaps not!!!!! Also, I wonder if there would be enough ventilation in it for a hamster?

Personally, i'd spray wooden items with pet safe cleaning spray then rinse well or a good old scrub with soap and hot water then rinse and dry. Some people bake wood to get rid of possible germs.
Unless a hamster has died of a contagious disease or had parasites like mites etc, i don't see the need to bin wooden items.
Some of my hamsters share a playpen (not at the same time) and use the same wooden toys.

Thanks, Ria, that's helpful to know. I have a spray, so will do as you suggest.

Hi, I am so glad I found this post regarding the Mickey 2XL. I have Winnie who is a Robo in a Multi Duna at the moment. I was thinking of moving her into one of these as I feel I could use the space a bit better. She has a Silent Runner now and as you can imagine is has to sit right on the base in a multi duna.

I am just a little bit scared that she may climb the bars as I know she is currently safe in the cage she has.

What do you guys think?

My new detolf is almost ready - lids made, varnished outside and plastikoted inside, but we are struggling to find suitable mesh. Other half came home the other day with inch-wide mesh, and thought we could put two offset layers together to divide each inch square into 4. Would that be okay? Alternatively, what size mesh would you use for a winter white dwarf? She could be quite small when she arrives as I asked for a young one. If you have any suggestions where I could buy suitable mesh online I'd be really grateful, as we don't have many options of where to buy locally on our remote Scottish island.

The only other thing we are waiting for now is the hammy. With the recent storms lots of ferry sailings were cancelled, so they postponed sending them, and by the time the storms were over the A9 was snowed up! Hoping I get her before she's in her dotage!

Do you not have a B&Q in Stornoway? They sell the half inch and smaller mesh in a roll for £10. You could try doubling up the one inch mesh so it halves the size of the squares which should work.

Ha! Getting stuck in snow on the A9 in February brings back memories......

Sarah - our robo was in the Mickey 2XL and it's a great cage for a robo I found. He occasionally climbed the bars a bit but it's not a tall cage. The main thing is to make sure there is nothing hard or sharp they can land on. I had a cheese cube (pointy triangles when opened up) toy so I had that partly under a shelf and partly under the sputnik so it couldn't be landed on. They're not great bar climbers really - furry feet underneath - I found he only did it when he was behind the wheel if he got scared by something and he didn't climb very far.

It does have that bit more useable space somehow, with the bars being wider than the base and slightly bigger than the duna multy. You can fit a shelf in it as well - I had the sand bath on the shelf. He also had a labyrinth house and a 9" wheel and there was still plenty of floorspace.

I think I'd be a bit worried about two layers of mesh overlapping in case the hamster did happen to get stuck between the two layers (if he or she got through the first layer). 1cm square mesh (or half inch) is the usual.

Cypher, is unscented safe4 a brand name? I Googled it but couldn't find anything that seemed to match that. I do plan to bring a new hamster into my home in a couple months, and while I'm getting rid of anything that my hamster has chewed, I do have a few things (like wooden hidey huts) that she used but didn't chew on. I'm hoping to save what I can, but am willing to replace it all if need be.
