Default Found my marbles

Sometimes a solution is so simple and worth passing on.

Edwina hasn't sussed the bottle yet i think so i put a miniature jam jar with water in her habitat while she was out exploring. She drunk from it but i was worried that she could fall into it head first because she is still young and small.

Then i had one of my rare brainwaves. I put some glass marbles in the jar to make it safe for her and being glass they won't affect the taste of the filtered water.

Very good thinking. I have seen a pebble placed into a water dish before for the same purpose.

She sounds like a very very cute hamster

Good idea. I have used stones in a lightweight water bottle stand before to weigh it down so it didn’t get pulled over. I’d be a little bit careful with marbles though - she might try and pouch one? Sorry to be a killjoy! How about a saucer?

You could try putting a bit of peanut butter on the water bottle spout. Hopefully she'll lick it off and in doing so learn that it produces water.

How old is Edwina? The pet shop should really have made sure she was drinking from the bottle before letting her go.

Oh! Never crossed my mind that she would pouch one. What would she want a marble for? I can't find a saucer in the right size but will look for something suitable and shallow. I do have some large glass marbles and she could never get her chops around those but they may be too big for the miniature jam jar.

Right, need to rethink this. Thanks for pointing it out Serendipity.

She must have been drinking in the pet shop but she was in a small tank with three others so always near the bottle.

Never thought of the peanut butter trick, thanks Sushi but currently only have almond butter which should be ok i guess.

They said she's 12 weeks but she looks younger to me.

I believe peanut butter is not recommended either! If she is happier with a water bowl then maybe that is the way to go. It would probably be difficult to pouch a marble if there are a few and they have water on top! More the thing they would do when free roaming - they will pouch anything then. I remember having to scour the floor for little bits of Lego just in case. If she hasn’t tried yet then it’s probably ok until you find the right dish.

Which water bottle does she have? All ours have been fine with the 75ml Ferplast drinky- let’s water our well but doesn’t leak. Nugget the Robo was fine with the Ferplast zippy but I found Syrians didn’t like that one. The spout is underneath so easier for a Robo. I have a nice shallow dish I got as a good bowl that might be good as a water bowl - I’ll see if I can find the link. Or just use a pebble!

It was this one - although mine was white. Moo has it at the moment as a good bowl. It’s quite shallow.

You'd think, but I had the same thing with little Rollo. I found him in the petshop standing in his dry water bowl licking the bottom of it. He was three weeks old and came home with me there and then. He had no idea what a water bottle was so for the first ten days I supplied a shallow saucer and a bottle. I only removed the saucer when I saw him drinking successfully from the bottle.

Sadly animals are just a commodity to many pet shops, their welfare being of very minimal concern.

I've taken the smaller marbles out and put one big one in which she couldn't pouch. She wouldn't want to get her face wet anyway. At one point i thought she's trying to get into the jar that's when i got worried but she pulled back and washed her face. I'll leave both in to see what she prefers. The bottle is fine and works. Robo Gordon had the same jam jar but prefers the bottle nowadays and managed fine but he seems a bit more clued up than Edwina and figured everything out quicker. I suppose its all new to her and she's learning. She'll hear her neighbour Percy rattling on his bottle often enough.......
