What do you guys think about not having a shelf in such a big cage? She has plenty of paper bedding to burrow in and I have 3 hides and a tunnel in there so she has places to hide.

I think you should be alright lol. I wasn't going to put the shelf in, but then j changed my mind but I think you should be fine. If you're worried ant your hamster being scared at the open space above them then maybe try putting a towel over some of the cage?

Re: Barney Cage Set Ups
I've noticed that she likes to climb so I think she would enjoy it. I haven't put the house that it comes with in either as I was going to plastikote it first to make it easy to clean but maybe she'd be happy just climbing on that.

Re: Barney Cage Set Ups
I would put the shelf in - it helps them feel secure. But I'd wait a couple of weeks until she's settled a bit - it can be noisy and jerky trying to get the thing in place! So best done while she's out of the cage. If she shows signs of wanting to come out before the two weeks then you could add it, but they get scared/skitty easily in the first couple of weeks.
Ben- your set up looks great! Just watch the yellow cheese cube - not sure the holes are big enough for a syrian to fit through. Some of it depends on the size of the syrian (but they can grow quite big some of them!) but generally anythijg smaller than 5 to 6cm diameter is a risk for them getting stuck. I had one of those for our robo and I seem to remember the holes were too small for a syrian, but I might be wrong - can't remember.

I have the boi!!!! He has no name so far and I have no pics of him yet as he's sleeping in his travel cage (and wasn't happy at all when I tried to wake him up so I'm leaving him to wake up by himself later) but when I post a pic if you think of any name suggestions let me know lmao. Yeah I'll monitor him with the cheese and see if he struggles and if he does I'll take it out :)

Re: Barney Cage Set Ups
Might be good if you started a new thread Ben - about your hammy and his Barney cage. Then you can just add and update us! A lot of people have a particular thread for their hamster and keep updating it with news and photos. When you think of a name it could be "name's" thread! Apparently a 150g syrian will fit in the cube (which is quite small). Any toys check for splinters and nails as well (surprising how many have hazards!). My cheese cube was fine but some had issues with sharp metal bits or nails. Since having hamsters I have a sheet of sandpaper around!

Yeah I'll make a new thread, op's probably not that happy that their thread is being used for my ham instead of barney cage setups lmao. I have sandpaper already so that's good. I've gotten a few ideas for names but I'm still undecided but I'll make a thread for names too :)

Re: Barney Cage Set Ups
I'm sure Kyomgr doesn't mind - it's all relevant to the Barney cage topic! But having your own thread would be a good idea too as you've just got your hamster

Re: Barney Cage Set Ups
Hey, sorry I disappeared, things have been manic at work!
Absolutely don't mind; as Serendipity said, it's still about the barney cage
Thank you for all the photos, I find it really helpful to have visual references and I find it really difficult to translate things from cages with different dimensions at times lol. All the photos have been really great
