Question Is 830sq in enough for a Syrian?

I'm looking to get another hamster. Previously I had a dwarf called Mercury, however due to her passing I'm looking to get another hamster. I'm looking at getting a male Syrian (as apparently they are calmer and less likely to have cafe aggression, bar bite etc) however I've never owned one before. I have the Barney cage which is around 830sq inches iirc. Will this be enough space for a Syrian to live, with almost daily playtime outside of the cage(once tamed)? I need to know as I'm planning on getting a hamster in a few weeks and if I can't provide enough space for a Syrian I will instead get a dwarf. I don't have the space for a larger cage, and I can't get any cage extentions either, so providing more space unfortunately isn't an option. Thank you

Hi Benefitsben,

I've got a male syrian in the Barney and he seems happy. My main concern would be making sure you've got deep enough substrate (being limited by tray depth makes me twitch a little) but given that I'm really pretty sure Hydrogen tunnels *under* his substrate, I'd say there's enough, because I've watched for signs of shifting substrate and had no evidence of it when I *know* he's moved from under his house (middle of the cage) to one of the corners.

I had concerns about barred cages before I got Hydrogen, but I think both he and I appreciate the versatility in terms of being able to hang things from walls/the top of the cage: Hydrogen really likes climbing and perching as high as he can get in the cage and likes to observe his domain from the bridge pretty high up in his cage. One thing I would say if you've got a climber: make sure you've allowed for the clumsiness of hamsters. Hydrogen isn't quite the expert climber he thinks he is, so hammocks underneath the higher points of his set up make sure he can't hurt himself

Whichever species you go for, congrats on future ham

The Barney should be fine. You can always use part of a cardboard box to stop bedding going through the bars and allow you to have an area that's deeper than the rest
I have a Syrian in an Alaska, one in the P@H XL cage, another in a bin cage and a roborovski in a zoozone 2 (large).

Lots of people use that cage for a syrian. You can always tie cardboard or chew mats to the side of the bars with jute or sisal at one end to add more substrate so it can burrow more. That's what I have done with my savic plaza cages.
