Cage theme ideas
Hi all. As many of you now know, I have 3 more hamsters. They've got the basics in the cage, nothing to fancy, but everything they need while settling in.
Niko is in his zoozone and is a 'natural' theme. I was trying to think of some other themes for the other cages but all I can think of is 'desert'.
Has your hamster cage got a theme? Can anyone else think of some? Pictures are always welcome!!

Re: Cage theme ideas
My hamsters don't have themed habitats because they have been adapted to their needs and preferences.
My non burrowing, height loving Syrian has a suspended wicker tunnel attached bridge so he's able to walk across his cage off the ground and sit on various degus shelves placed at different heights.
My diabetic dwarf can't have wood or anything that forms mould when damp in his habitat so has washable plastic and ceramic plus disposable cardboard items. I made him a platform with a ramp from an Alaska plastic shelf.
My robo lives underground and likes to run around so has deep substrate and three long, bendy ladders to run across.
Best to watch a hamster for a while and find out what they do in their habitat and what they like rather than going for a set theme i think.
Dessert might be alright for a sand loving dwarf but some syrians like sand too, as long as you add an oasis with lots of millet sprays etc.
I have seen a "Hobbit" themed set up somewhere which i loved and really worked well for a hamster.
I'm looking forward to see your new set ups because you are very creative and imaginative.

I don't tend to do cage themes either, because as much as I enjoy re-arranging cages, I don't think think my Robo would like it.
I like watching cage tour videos on YouTube occasionally, which is a good source of ideas. I've seen some people do a beach theme, which looks fun.

Re: Cage theme ideas
Hi, I guess the only sort of theme I have is a natural set up, other than that I stuck a load of xmas stuff in for xmas. Other themes I have seen are Halloween, Spring, Valentines, seasonal, or specific colours.

In the new cages they have a 'deep' side for burrowing. A sand area, shelves climbing stuff...so far they've all been digging in the sand, making nests and burrowing. Also climbing. This way they have a variety of things to try while I'm not touching them and I get to see their likes/dislikes and habits.
So far they all like everything so I can literally do anything thankfully.
I didn't know you had a diabetic ham. Apparently purr is low sugar and good for hamsters with diabetes and obesity. Have you every tried it? Was thinking of trying some when I finish my mix.
I was going to use millet and oat sprays as well as a few loose sprigs of herbs. Not sure what else yet. I'm currently waiting for some paper mache hides and tunnels to dry.

Thankfully my robo doesn't seem to mind me moving stuff about as long as I don't move his nest or hoard he is all good

I personally love this channel. It's where I got my forest theme idea from. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jC27rcyTo8&

Your hams new homes must be so exciting for them, no wonder they are into everything.
My dwarf was diabetic when i got him from pets@home adoption centre but they hadn't noticed his excessive drinking/peeing so i tested him and got very helpful advice on this forum. He was quite crazy and aggressive but has calmed down a lot, still bites though.
He eats the Rodipet Hybrid mix which is suitable for diabetic dwarves and he likes it so haven't tried Purr but will check it out, thanks.
Papier mache sounds interesting. What kind of glue/binding material do you use inbetween the layers? Not too tasty i hope or it will get nibbled up, lol.

Of course! It's not entirely done yet, little Jupiter got to come home faster than I thought and I want her to settle fully first before I add more things. But I used a natural theme with a forest background. I used coconut fibre in the back but I'm planning to extend that further. Also there might be another plant added. I used some driftwood and corkwood as well.
