Default Glass or Plastic Bottle?

Hi everyone I was wondering are glass water bottles better than plastic ones and if so how / why?

I was thinking about changing to glass but if there's no differences I won't

Just for explanation I use a plastic bottle and a water bowl in my hamsters cage right now

Hmmm you pose an interesting question. I would imagine that glass has less potential for harmful chemicals to get into the water but to what extent this is actually a problem, I'm not sure. A lot of the plastic drinking bottles are made in China where their regulations are not the same as in the West.

Glass bottles are heavier and so if they are on the inside of the cage and happen to fall on a hamster while drinking, the potential for injury is higher but once again if the bottle is secured well I'm not sure how likely this would be.

I think the most important thing-which you already do- is to provide two separate sources of water in the event that a bottle malfunctions or a bowl gets tipped over.

I don't think there is a difference drinking wise, I just think the glass one is more environmentally friendly.
Also plastic leaches into water bottles.
Personally, I have used both types for my hamsters.

I will say that while you can find endless plastic bottles made in China, there are still some not made there. I believe Lixit bottles in general should be made in the USA(they even have glass options), but Classic plastic bottles in the UK are as far as I can remember made in the UK. I know Savic plastic products are also supposed to not be made in China(I forgot the exact country), though I can't say for sure how many hamster options there may be.

Buying products made in countries known to have better standards can certainly help improve safety standards and overall quality control, along with proper cleaning of water bottles which I'd have to say we're probably severely lacking when it comes to hamsters. Glass doesn't hold bacteria etc like plastic, doesn't leach into the water, or anything like that and is more environmentally friendly etc. Obviously if you had to have an emergency water source other than safe watery veg and you had no good quality glass option then it would be the responsible choice to offer a plastic bottle(hamster dehydration is not something anyone wants to witness or go through, and those hamsters who do experience it don't always recover no matter how much work goes into nursing them back to health).

The ferplast bottles are also not made in China (Italian company with a factory in Slovakia if I recall) but I don't like the valve and my dimmer hamsters (bless their hearts) have had difficulty figuring out how to drink from them.

AmityvilleHams, I think you are correct about Savic, I think they manufacture in Belgium.

Dehydration is something I really fear with my hamsters especially in the hot climate I live in.

We don't get Lixit or Classic products here in South Africa sadly and when I was in the UK recently I looked at Pets at Home but found the identical brands to what we have here!

I never really thought about the bottle falling as I've never once had that happen but it's a good thought to keep in mind. I use a detolf and my plastic bottle is held up by heavy duty Velcro I wonder would that also be enough for a bottle? I also have read some people say they smash easily ? It's a big worry obviously to keep my hamster safe.
And I also never thought much about where the bottles are made either I'm using the classic crystal deluxe for my hamster I've no idea where it's made!
Definitely makes me think a lot

I have originally used the Trixie glass bottle (looks like a test tube) in our Robo's tank with a homemade stand but found that it leaked and was too fragile for someone as heavy handed and clumsy as me. Like our other hamsters our Robo now uses the classic plastic bottle on a homemade bottle stand. I only use filtered water and believe that the quality of the water is more important than the type of bottle its dispensed from. The classic bottles are cheap to buy so can be replaced regularily.

I use living world glass bottles with wooden stands in my cages. Each of my hamsters also have a ceramic water bowl.
