Default hamster climbing wheel- need adjustments

I have the 12" silent spinner for my hamster and she has just recently learned how to very efficiently climb up the back of it. Is there a fix for this, maybe blocking it off with cardboard? I just don't want her to hurt herself and I know that's how she has escaped recently.

Like you said that is exactly one of the ways they can escape.
What type of cage is she in. is the wheel attached to bars or free standing?
Does the cage have a lid?
I would suggest she would probably just chew through the cardboard, but you could give it a go.
I would just make sure there is bedding around the back of the wheel so if/when she falls she has a soft landing.
If the wheel is not attached to the cage, the only other thing I can think of is to move the wheel away from the side, if that is how you have it placed. Or to actually attach it to the side of the cage if that is possible.
Others on here may have other ideas.

My baby hamster does the same thing. I have a barred cage and the wheel is attached to the bars.

I have just piled bedding very deeply around the back and sides of the wheel in case he falls.

Just make sure the cage lid is secure! Incidentally - is the wheel spinning ok. 12" silent spinners are notoriously bad for that after a manufacturing change - in that they don't spin freely. If it doesn't spin that well she may be trying to escape because she's not getting the exercise on the wheel. The 12" silent "runner" is a much better wheel.
